After the huge update recently that overhauled the Steam Overlay, Valve has put up another Steam and Steam Deck Beta to fix up lingering issues and upgrade Steam Input.

For the May 1st update on Desktop here's what's changed:

General

  • Fixed -silent command-line option not working.
  • Fixed a crash related to http transfers.
  • Fixed opening systray menu for certain monitor configurations.

Steam Input

  • Virtual Menus now work in the desktop overlay.
  • Added binding listener dialog that lets you bind inputs by hitting a mouse button, keyboard key, or gamepad button.
  • LED Color/Brightness Action reinstated as a bindable action. Find the Action settings inside the Game Pad tab when selecting an action binding (available on controllers with LEDs only).
  • Fixed the controller configurator not fully closing when backing out via gamepad in the Desktop overlay.
  • Fixed the controller configurator opening layout previews in a new window instead of directly in the configurator.
  • Fixed cases where alt-tabbing between the stand alone instance of the desktop configurator and a game would not update the in-game layout.

Linux

  • Fixed windows not grouping together in the taskbar.
  • Fixed pinning a steam window to the taskbar resulting in a shortcut that could not launch steam.
  • Fixed association of steam windows with the steam.desktop application entry.

The taskbar issue was quite a little nuisance, nothing truly breaking but annoyingly all the same so glad to see that fixed quickly (and yes it is actually fixed, I checked).

Over on Steam Deck the changes are basically the same, since Valve now share a lot of the code between them, something they were keen to highlight in the recent major update so it makes implementing features a lot easier for them and they can bring the features to PC and Steam Deck faster. These are the Steam Deck changes (Beta and Preview channels):

My steam on the desktop bailed out right away after the update. Turns out, steamwebhelper needs "apt install libsdl3".
