Indie developer Orangepixel currently has two really fun looking games worth looking into, both offering full Native Linux support and they both have newer demos available to try out.

The first is Regulator City arriving sometime this year, a top down roguelike shooter where you are backed by a team of NPC's and use your skills and super-power abilities to stop an Alien substance from taking over the city. Complete missions, upgrade skills, and regulate the city.

Game Features:

  • YOUR TEAM IS YOUR WEAPON - In this top-down shooter you are not alone, you are backed up by a team of trigger happy experts. They will help you out by taking down enemies, breaching doors, gathering intel, and destroying stuff! Use them as your main weapon! You can lead the pack - but you can also just dictate the direction and let them do the dangerous work. It's all about you surviving the missions.. we can clone new team mates !
  • SHAPE THE CITY - Completing misisons will allow you to select new buildings for future missions, and the type of building is important! Build a hospital and you might gain 2 HP on your next mission. Or select an industrial building and unlock new weapon technology. Just don't forget: type of buildings also have an effect on the gangs in the city!
  • SUPER POWERS The alien substance that crashed in the city doesn't just change the behavior of gang members. It has also been used to give you super abilities! Each playable character has a different set of Abilities and special dodge move. Collect Alien Ooze throughout the city, to power your special ability and unleash it when you're back is against the wall!

The other is Heroes Of Loot: Gauntlet Of Power coming a bit later in 2024, it's a fast paced, randomly generated action RPG shooter with dungeon crawling and Rogue-like elements. The developer previously explained it's a bit like combining Vampire Survivors with The Binding of Isaac which has my interest piqued.

This one is a bit earlier in development, with the full feature plan not currently set but the idea is fun. In an email the developer, Pascal, mentioned how it came from "this silly idea I had one Sunday afternoon and got the core game loop all working and playable within just a few weeks".

They also have lots of videos going over game development on their YouTube channel.
