Tired of GZDoom mods for DOOM II just adding some maps or some gore? Be sure to take a look at Doom Infinite, which turns it into a FPS roguelike. I've been testing it out myself since it was emailed in (thanks Tate), and love the idea of it! Currently not finished and what you get is only a demo of things to come, as they continue working on it but it's really promising if you love your retro shooters with a bit of extra spice.
More about it: "Encounter demons empowered with various traits and curses that make them stronger, faster or much more tricky to send back to hell. Collect, mix and match multiple permanent power-ups for a unique approach on each runs. Find unique weapons variations or mod them yourself to your liking. Explore more to unlock new places or discover hidden secrets, but beware of the traps and challenges lingering about. All that while the dynamic weather or map-wide curses provide additional challenges. Even the maps themselves can warp and distort, presenting a slightly different path each time you visit them. But more importantly than that - survive the longest you can, while shooting anything moving that crosses your path!
Greatly expanding upon the originals' mechanics, Infinite allows for a fun, dynamic and unique experience along with perma-death and unlockable achievements. From dynamic spawners, balanced game director, visual and audio updates, three brand new weapons, music shuffler to even a simple but expressive emote system - those are only some of the extra components built into this mod, all to enhance ripping and tearing through hordes of demons hunting you down."
You can find it on Mod DB.
To play it on Linux you need a copy of GZDoom installed, along with the wad file from DOOM II (GOG / Steam). You'll need to make sure your DOOM II wad file is in the correct location which for standard installs will be:
And for Flathub installs it will be:
And then place the Doom Infinite pk3 file into the same folder.
Then to run you via terminal with a standard install:
