Arriving later this year from developer Critical Games, 8-Bit Adventures 2 [Official Site] will bring a vast and varied world inspired by classics with modern touches.

The story sounds quite interesting:

The antagonist takes the form of a video game ‘glitch’. Faced with erasure, the Glitch lashes out, distorting the world and threatening its people. It’s up to the player’s party of 7 distinct characters (3 returning, 4 brand new) to undo these distortions and defeat the Glitch. But to do so, they’ll have to brave dozens of dungeons, defeat deadly enemies, and even travel to other worlds!

The developer told me they can't promise a Linux version on release day, but if they don't manage to do so, it will be their very next priority. With that in mind, take a look at the trailer:

Quoting: slaapliedjeD'oh I was going to go buy the first one, but apparently it has not been ported to Linux. Almost bought 8-Bit Adventure Anthology Volume 1 thinking that it was the first part, but apparently it's just remakes of Shadowgate, Uninvited and Deja Vu. May buy those later anyhow..

Any chance for the first 8-Bit Adventures to be ported?

Quoting: slaapliedjeAnd I wasn't particularly picking on this game, it's just I've seen a lot of games that say '8-bit' to be retro, but there is no way they could actually be made to run on the real hardware.

8-Bit Invaders is a perfect example of this. In fact there is absolutely nothing 8-bit about it. It's not even really retro.

This game looks much like Phantasy Star! So I'm interested for sure.

No worries at all slaapliedje! I didn't really think you were - was just trying to explain our particular approach =D I've noticed a lot of games now that aren't even remotely 8-bit use the term (I looked up 8-Bit Invaders, and while it has a mixture of visual styles, certainly none of them are anything close to 8-bit), and it does get pretty silly.

Thank you very much - that's very high praise! Phantasy Star was actually one of our go-to visual references for certain assets. I sincerely hope you enjoy 8-Bit Adventures 2 if you end up checking it out!

And to answer your question about 8-Bit Adventures 1, I'm very sorry about that. That game was made in a different, much more rigid engine (compared to the sequel) that was rooted in PC architecture. So there's no way that I know of to port it to Linux (or Mac, for that matter). I apologise for the inconvenience there. If I ever get the chance to remake the first game (to bring it more in-line with the sequel), that would definitely be made available on Linux =)

It's funny you mentioned the 8-Bit Adventure Anthology, because what you've described was one of my biggest fears when that collection came out. 8-Bit Adventures 1 had already been out for over 2 years at that point, so I was a little annoyed by their choice of name =P
