The developers of the impressive action RPG Last Epoch [Official Site] that we tested during the Kickstarter have now put out the Alpha version.

If you missed it, here's their latest gameplay preview:

At a glance, here's what's new in the alpha:

  • New areas to explore which are the first areas of the real campaign
  • Mastery system redesign, including 5 new mastery classes (15 total!)
  • New skills and visuals
  • New monsters
  • New AI
  • New chat system
  • New game launcher and patcher

What's pleasing to see, is that Eleventh Hour Games have kept up with the Linux support and so it is included during the Alpha period. However, there are some major problems with their new launcher and updater. I haven't yet been able to get it to work.

Each time I try it, either the updater gives me an "unknown error" or if I do manage to get it to launch, it gives some sort of black screen and then either quits or forces GNOME Shell back to the login screen, so it has some major problems to work through. I've sent the developer some logs and information on this, hopefully it will get fixed soon so we can properly dive into the Alpha build.

I've tried with my second monitor disabled, to see if it was some funky windowing issue, but even then it's the exact same issue. It's possible their updater hasn't actually downloaded what it needs, so I will keep an eye on it for any fixes and report again when I can get in.

Update: They are continuing to work on the launcher, I've now managed to get a build that works so should have thoughts up tomorrow with a preview video.

My first impression from the video is that this is basically Torchlight II with more "realistic" graphics.

Sweet! If that's true, that could be my kind of game. Is it controller friendly? Let's say like Victor Vran? I prefer WASD or controller stick movements to point & click with mouse.

It reminds me of Titan Quest, which isn't necessarily a good thing because I found Titan Quest rather bland.

Controller friendly would be amazing, since that's one thing I wanted most for the original TL2.

When I was on Windows, I backed Path of Exiles (still have yet to claim my custom weapon design for backing.) Now that I'm focused on native Linux gaming you can be sure I'll be backing Last Epoch. The look already reminds me of PoE I hope they can deliver at least half of what PoE does while still supporting Linux.

@liam Do you have the latest download? There was some problems with the second iteration of the linux launcher, but they fixed them pretty quickly. It's working for me fine (apart from some artifacting graphics) on Mint right now. Since it's likely just an issue with the launcher and not the game itself, you could ask if they'd be willing to send you a direct download. All else fails their discord has a channel for Linux support and I know at least one of the community members has been working on fixing the launcher for various distros.

For anyone else that's interested in the game I'd recommend checking out the wiki https://lastepoch.gamepedia.com , I've been putting in some work on getting that up and updated.

I've already been in touch with the developer about it. It was only downloaded last night, I've seen nothing to say they've put up anything new since. When was the latest launcher for Linux put up, unless it was today it shouldn't make a difference but I will try again anyway.

Edit: Going by what they've told it me, it seems one of the developers has been working on the launcher fixing it up on Linux. I've managed to get it to work now most of the time, so I shall have a preview up tomorrow :)

Are you playing EVE Online on Linux? I'm just wondering how native you mean. :)

Native is native. As mentioned in the quoted post I switched from Window to Linux a while back; I haven't played EVE Online in years, but I do like my old avatar. Though if EVE Online went native I'd return at the drop of a hat.

Was there anything you had to do to get it working? I ask because I'm still getting "Unknown Error. Please try again." consistently; logs seem to point to a torrent issue.

Edit: Fixed the second quote.

No idea. I removed it all, purged the config files and downloaded the launcher again. Third time seemed to do it. It's still not perfect, sometimes it will still give that error and completely mess up, but I can now get it to run most of the time it seems.
