An update on the Linux version of Underworld Ascendant

By - | Views: 9,752

After a reader contacted us concerned that Underworld Ascendant [Official Site] wasn't listing Linux support on their Steam page, I got in touch with OtherSide Entertainment to get some up to date clarification on what's happening.

The last time we spoke was in June so with the news that the release was coming later than originally planned, it was a good idea to get some up to date information.

Here's what they told me after a short chat today:

We still do not have an exact date for the Linux release for Underworld Ascendant on Steam, but the Mac and Linux versions will be made available sometime after the PC release to make sure they have enough QA attention. Once we have a more concrete schedule, we'll be happy to share it with you!

Backers and the public will receive a Linux version, but most likely will not be available on November 15th with the PC release.

Thankfully, because we have some dedicated external playtesters who have also been helping us on the side with the Linux and Mac issues, we're still tracking and fixing major issues along the way while we work on the PC version. The time after November 15th will just give us more time to dedicate to making sure the Mac and Linux versions are ready, and we didn't miss anything.

While it's always seriously disappointing to be left waiting (hello Battletech), the fact that they are fixing issues with the Linux version as they go and getting it tested is still a good sign.

It should also launch on GOG as well, although that doesn't seem to have a date yet.

Great! It´s nice to have some extra confirmation that it is coming. Ordinarily, I might be a bit worried about a possible prolonged delay after the windows release but with the current "Steam Play" situation, there´s no risk of a game shortage anytime soon.

I always die a little inside when someone says "PC" to distinguish it from linux and/or mac.
It's just so... wrong. PC describes the hardware, not the software.

Perhaps we could adopt the term LC to reference a Linux Computer, and then PC can be used to refer to "Pathetic Crap", which seems a most fitting description of Windows....

Let's hope they mean a delay of 2 weeks - 4 months. Longer than that and it starts to get frustrating.

EXACTLY. PC means Personal Computer, not WINDOWS computer. The term applies to any general computing device regardless of OS. Linux, Apple, Windows, etc all fall under the umbrella term PC.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world that PC was a synonym for Windows.

Even Apple promoted the term "PC" to mean "Windows computer" in old advertising.

Good, hopefully the Linux specific work won't take very long. So far no updates from We Happy Few for example, which was also promised post release.

Actually talking about Battletech, they did release an update recently about Linux:

Linux update: The team is still actively working on our Linux release. We hit a snafu with playback of audio (as in, “There’s no sound in the game”) but we’ve gotten support from an external party and appear to be back on track. We expect the Linux version to be available in Beta within the next few weeks.

We apologize to our Kickstarter Backers and to others waiting to play the game in Linux or their native language and we’re doing our best to get this work done as soon as possible. More details regarding localization can be found in this BATTLETECH Community thread.
