Announcing the GamingOnLinux wallpaper competition

Posted by , | Views: 30,873
I need a new wallpaper, and I would very much like one that in some way has GamingOnLinux branding on it. Here's your chance to shine and win something.

1) Enter as many as you like
2) It must somehow have "" or "GamingOnLinux" on it and be easily readable
3) Ideally have it in a format that's easy to edit
4) No art taken directly from games (that includes screenshots, logos etc, it's a legal grey area)
5) You don't have to use our penguin logo!

Accepted licenses
All the wallpapers submitted will need to be under Creative Commons BY-4.0 or CC0

Since I will be using it for personal and GOL related uses, I need to be able to use it without restrictions, so those licenses seem fair to allow the same to others.

Where to host it
You can use any image upload website like imgur to upload it and link it in the comments.

Resolution and source files
Resolutions: At least 1920x1080, one that scales okay to higher and lower would be awesome.

Please keep the source file, I may need higher resolutions in future and may want to make adjustments. If the chosen winner does not have the source file, a new winner will be chosen.

What can I win?
Your choice, I can either donate £20 to a FOSS/Linux related project/website of your choice or you can be gifted games worth £20 from any store that accepts gifting games.

Don't feel bad if you want the games, not everyone can afford what they want it's totally cool either way!

When does it end
Sunday July 3rd 9PM UTC.

Winner chosen by me alone.

Go get creative!

I am hoping to do more fun little competitions like this as time goes on, stay tuned. Article taken from

some questions :

1. what resolution you want the wallpapers to be?
2. Can we blend other ready cool wallpapers with or you want every pixel to be drawn by us? :o?

Resolutions: At least 1920x1080, one that scales okay to higher and lower would be awesome.

You can only use other wallpapers if:
1) You link to the original
2) It has a license where I can use it for whatever I like

See it here or here for the full source (though MediaGoblin mistakes the SVG for a video, so you have to download the "Original file" ).

Edit: Made a 4k version.

Ok, here's my attempt. It's 1920x1080, Didn't know what size to do so went with that one.
Here's a link to it on DeviantArt to view at full size.

Dude I love this idea of a art competition. We should do more.

This steam sale is wiping me out I think I bought 20 games already Must fight impulses XD.

(My strategy is to collect enough Linux games for Big Picture that I'll wipe out my Temporary Windows Rig. I only wish they had a Tony Hawk or Skate game on SteamOS already to quench my sports genre draw.)

So I spent a couple hours envisioning and here's my entry. It's 4k

I’m not a graphic artist but thought it was a good occasion to have a bit of fun with Inkscape, so I looked for pretty CC0 pictures and found this cool photo of oil in water and added some text on it:
Thanks to Qantourisc for the help!

Edit: I’ve changed the image to add ".com" and make it 1080p. Original 1920×1200 picture without ".com", new 1920×1200 picture with ".com".

Edit: Licence is CC0.

Edit: it also reminds me strongly of Osmos, which is one of the first games I played on Linux!

Edit: Source svg (inkscape) file (1920×1200 version)
