Announcing the GamingOnLinux wallpaper competition

Posted by , | Views: 32,004
I need a new wallpaper, and I would very much like one that in some way has GamingOnLinux branding on it. Here's your chance to shine and win something.

Rules
1) Enter as many as you like
2) It must somehow have "GamingOnLinux.com" or "GamingOnLinux" on it and be easily readable
3) Ideally have it in a format that's easy to edit
4) No art taken directly from games (that includes screenshots, logos etc, it's a legal grey area)
5) You don't have to use our penguin logo!

Accepted licenses
All the wallpapers submitted will need to be under Creative Commons BY-4.0 or CC0

Since I will be using it for personal and GOL related uses, I need to be able to use it without restrictions, so those licenses seem fair to allow the same to others.

Where to host it
You can use any image upload website like imgur to upload it and link it in the comments.

Resolution and source files
Resolutions: At least 1920x1080, one that scales okay to higher and lower would be awesome.

Please keep the source file, I may need higher resolutions in future and may want to make adjustments. If the chosen winner does not have the source file, a new winner will be chosen.

What can I win?
Your choice, I can either donate £20 to a FOSS/Linux related project/website of your choice or you can be gifted games worth £20 from any store that accepts gifting games.

Don't feel bad if you want the games, not everyone can afford what they want it's totally cool either way!

When does it end
Sunday July 3rd 9PM UTC.

Winner chosen by me alone.

Go get creative!

I am hoping to do more fun little competitions like this as time goes on, stay tuned. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

mirvI'm just going to point out that, as Liam said, pictures must have a license where he can use them for whatever he would like. That will mean no images of game titles can be used anywhere, unless the publisher, developer, or whoever holds copyright for the game artwork, give permission for it. Or, of course, if the game title artwork is creative commons.
I think that is open for debate. IANAL, but as far as I can tell, this is fair use (see here for some guidelines). For instance, it is generally agreed that using images of album covers in low resolutions (up to about 400x400 pixels) constitutes fair use, mostly due to "the amount and substantiality of the portion taken" and "the effect of the use upon the potential market" (quoting the guidelines I linked).

You're right: you're not a lawyer, and neither am I, which is why I wouldn't recommend any sort of risk be taken. Whole, or substantial parts, of unaltered game titles were easily discernible in some of the images. I don't think that constitutes fair use, particularly when GOL is run as a private business, I believe, for tax purposes. I'm sure Liam will correct me if I'm wrong on any of that. My point is: better to err on the side of caution in this case.

Could it be possible to have them in higher resolution? (I have a 2560x1440)
And also in a lossless format like PNG? Some JPEG compression artifact aren't that beautiful ;)
