Sad news for fans of Roccat hardware as the sole developer working on Roccat device support, Stefan Achatz, is stepping down from his work.

You might not have heard of him, but he is the sole person who has been working on Roccat devices to enable you to get all the features out of your fancy keyboards and mice.

He posted this simple message:
Stefan AchatzI'm working on the already released Skeltr. This will be the last device I'm doing, this projects ends here.

This is sad, as Roccat don't do any work themselves on Linux support for their devices, which means in future you probably won't be able to use any of the fancy features included in their expensive range.

I actually interviewed Stefan back in 2014, so go take a look if you never read it.

This will certainly make me re-consider who I will be purchasing my next keyboard and mouse from, as it likely won't be Roccat.

Thanks for letting me know northerner! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Damn, That was fast :O

It is a shame though :'( His work was the reason for choosing roccat, No other manufacture has anything close like that of the roccat-tools suite that he's done.

Is the drivers he wrote opensource? Maybe the community can keep it functioning if it is. Can't blame him for quitting, but it does seem sad.

Would be interesting to know why he quit. If it wasn't for reasons that make it impossible to develop the project further maybe someone can step up and take over. Liam, if you know him already, do you think you could contact him and ask?

It's very sad, my latest mouses were Roccat due to Linux support. I think that if he tried to make a Patreon many people would be interested in help.

What is sad is the fact than we have to depend of open source enthusiasts to make hardware to work on linux, it sucks than roccat decide to not support linux.

Hopefully someone will continue supporting it.

could the company have taken him on to support linux out of the box, just an idea.
