Aspyr Media sent out a tweet today for Linux gamers stating that Civilization VI [Steam] for Linux is still possible.

This is a good sign, but we still don't have much information as to what exactly is going on. Originally the game was confirmed by the publisher to me directly, and a tweet from the official Civilization confirmed a Linux version. Then recently Aspyr Media said it was a possibility.

This new tweet doesn't offer anything new, but the fact that they are still talking about it should be taken as a good sign.

A developer from Aspyr Media also said this on Reddit when asked what stage it was at:

I really hope Aspyr Media manage to pull through for us! Whatever the issues they are facing may be, let's hope we get such a massively popular title.

The game has currently over 100K people playing, and it's constantly sat in the top five most played games on Steam right now. To miss out on this, would be a tragedy for us.

I think Civ5 is graphically actually surprisingly complex. The models look pretty detailed.

Anyway, Aspyr is being a bit weird on this one. The idea that it would be fine on mac, but not clear on whether a "quality port" can be made on Linux is ludicrous. If it can be done on Mac's OpenGL, then it can definitely be done on Linux. If they needed Metal, then Vulkan would most certainly be up to the task. The only thing that could possibly stop it is an economic reason. So personally, I read this as a bit of nonsense to hide the fact that they're simply not as far as they needed to be and delayed work on Linux. Which I get, but it would have been nice if they just said so.

In my personal opinion, Civ 5 lookad amazingly well. The menus and icons were glorious. Simple, functional, yet surprisingly elegant. Tiles were colorful enough to be recognizable and distinguishable, yet not too colorful. The same with units. I don't care a lot about leaders, but the graphic in Civ 6 looks less stellar. More like fantasy world, more like Warlock, than civ. I am less happy about the Civ 6 menus as well. Overall design, color choice, icons... it looks worse than Civ 5.

I've heard that XCOM performs worse in Linux than it does in Windows, but I get rock-solid framerates playing in Linux, so it doesn't seem to be a practical difference. However, there is evidence that XCOM 2 actually runs better in Linux than it does in Windows.

This is probably because Feral was brought on board early in development instead of being handled a pile of Windows code at the end.

I haven't noticed any graphical differences between the Windows and Linux version of Civ V, but it has been years since I played it in Windows.
