BadLands RoadTrip is an incredibly strange open-world FPS with customizable weapons, sadly not one I enjoyed even a moment of.

Disclosure: Key provided by the developer.

It's not often I actually give a game a bad review, largely because I stay away from signs of a poor game as I don't want to waste my time. In the case of BadLands RoadTrip, I thought it was quirky enough with an interesting weapon idea, that it might have been amusing. Sadly, it's not even slightly humorous for a moment.

It's an open-world FPS with quests to complete, where no one seems to have a neck—heads just float above the body. The only interesting idea they have, is that guns are constructed from various parts. This gives you the ability to add multiple barrels, change the handle, the power of the projectiles and so on. This is somewhat okay, but it in no way makes up for every other element of the game being outright terrible.

The interface for changing your gun is simple and easy enough to use, but it sure doesn't look good.

Sadly, it feels very much like a "my first FPS" game. I think I'm being quite generous to it here in all honesty. Everything about it, apart from the gun customization, is incredibly basic. There's absolutely no tactics involved in the battles, they're just so static and void of life where the enemies simply come as close as possible and keep firing at you.

The peformance on Linux is also pretty terrible, even on the most basic graphical setting it was struggling to hit 40FPS and so it gives off quite a sluggish experience. Multiple times it struggled to even stay around 20FPS, so it just isn't any good there either.

If the performance was better, I might have recommended it as a kids game so they can mess about with the weapon system, but it's not even good enough for that at the moment.

You can find it on Steam, honestly though there's a lot better out there for £7.19.

I think that version is the "pre-alpha concept demo". The Steam version is also 10% off at the moment, though I think my money this month is going to Ruiner!

Awwww, I was hoping this would magically be better than it looked to be. The free floating weapons look lame in all those virtual reality games I've seen (why is this a thing?) and they look triply so here. I could overlook it if the game turned out to be worthy of the word "zany," or one of its synonyms. But it's not, so I can't. Pooh.
