City-building strategy game 'Banished' is no longer having a Linux port

Posted by , / 16551 views

This is a weird one, after blogging for a while about porting Banished to Linux (and Mac), the developer seems to have given up on it.

I'm sad, because it's a game I still haven't played and was really looking forward to a Linux version. I find it strange, because they previously blogged about the process and everything seemed to be going so well. They even said the game was actually running on both platforms back in February.

That's changed, since the latest blog post where they said:

This will likely be the last update of Banished, except for any major bug fixes. The OSX and Linux versions development has stopped, and won’t be released. Going forward I’ll be focusing on new games and projects.

It's possible it was just taking too much time. It's also possible that sales of this early-2014 title have dropped off, making the developer reassess what they're doing. Shame to see all their work go to waste and for us to get no game.

Hopefully Icculus, or someone else can pick up the port and finish it.

Got this one in a bundle when I was still using Windows. Never really played it as I was waiting for the Linux version. Disappointed but not surprised.

cybercystI bought it hoping for the port.
Have you learned your lesson yet?

It's developed from only one person. So he should have a resources for port. Avid

This is indeed yet another example of why purchasing a game immediately when a port is announced or hinted at is a bad idea. Stay patient, hold onto your precious currency and wait until you can actually get a product for your money.

Wish I could get a refund on the game now. I bought it when he was talking about making a Linux port a long time ago. Guess from now on I no longer support games till they deliver on their promises.

Heartbreaking. I was looking forward to it. Perhaps some third-party source could port it, that would be great.

Not a surprise but they add OpenGL render to Windows version or OpenGL is still not finished? If is finished then better for us because it should better run in WINE.

Anyone know?

Man this sucks. This is one my favorite games and I have been very patiently waiting for years for it to come to Linux. Really disappointed!

Giving it a second thought... What about Icculus' offer to help porting games (https://www.patreon.com/posts/request-for-13971037)? Does the dev know about that?
