Civilization V Looks Rather Close To A Linux Version

Posted by , / 15328 views
Civilization V looks like it will gain a Linux version after-all with new information from the awesome SteamDB. We speculated on it coming to Linux as a result of being pictured in Steam's major announcements when they unveiled SteamOS.

Since then nothing really came of it until today! This is some major supporting evidence to support Civ V coming to Linux, I would be shocked if it didn't after this.

The SteamDB entry for it has been updated with new Linux information today:
Quotelaunch/2/config/oslist: linux
launch/2/description: Launch
launch/2/executable: ./Civ5XP

And also:
Quote282300/config/oslist: linux
282300/name: Civ5 BaseContent Linux
282301/config/oslist: linux
282301/name: Civ5 Executable Linux
282302/config/oslist: linux
282302/name: Civ5 BaseContent2 Linux
282303/config/oslist: linux

About
Become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the dawn of man into the space age: Wage war, conduct diplomacy, discover new technologies, go head-to-head with some of history’s greatest leaders and build the most powerful empire the world has ever known.

The Civ games are hugely popular and having the newer ones on Linux will be quite a big boost for Linux and SteamOS as Valve get ever closer to releasing a "stable" build for Steam Machines to roll out.

Exciting or what?

So as far as one could tell from SteamDB is Civ V as likely to come to Linux as XCOM: EU?

Not sure, it's all speculation of course until someone confirms it.

Damn, I promised myself i'd play it once it came out on Linux. People seem to love it but I find it really dumbed down compared to Civ4 (my favourite outside of AC).

Whats the consensus here? People love/hate Civ5?

Oh and I have all the expansion packs, I keep trying to give it a go but...

I see, but do you know of any records of a game acquiring "Signs of Linux Support" status and then reverting back to "No Linux Launch Config" or something like that?

Honestly, I had already accepted skipping Civ V and going straight to Beyond Earth, but now I guess I'll buy both just to show my appreciation.

I thought i'd have to wait for Beyond Earth, too!

My brother still thinks that the original Civilization is the definitive version, although he will accept Civilization II as being acceptable. Anything later than that is crap as far as he is concerned. My uncle is more tolerant of the later ones, however.

Given that, you may have trouble finding a consensus on any of the Civ games from anyone.

What does he think about FreeCiv?

I have civ V, and I have been waiting for linux version so much time. Hope this is a sign of a port.
Notice there is a mac version and also, the new civilization it seems to use (probably) a enhanced version of civV engine. same style of tiles, but different gameplay.
