I totally didn't forget to write about this. CrossCode is a rather intriguing RPG that has a style from the SNES era with obvious improvements.

The combat looks good, the graphics look cute, it has Zelda styled puzzles and it has good reviews. Think we might possibly be onto a winner here.

The Linux release came and went in February without much fanfare. I only came across it looking through the Steam changelogs that I numb my mind with scouting for hidden Linux releases. Steam still doesn't show games that get a Linux build in the New Releases section if it was on Windows first.

About the game
This retro-inspired 2D Action RPG might outright surprise you. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

Take the best out of two popular genres, find a good balance between them and make a great game. That’s what CrossCode does. And it works pretty well. You get the puzzles of Zelda-esque dungeons and are rewarded with the great variety of equipment you know and love from RPGs. During the fast-paced battles you will use the tools you find on your journey to reveal and exploit the enemies' weaknesses and at the same time will be able to choose equipment and skills for a more in-depth approach in fighting your enemies. I really liked the trailer and typically enjoy this type of game, however I'm disappointed that it is Early Access. Can anyone comment on how far along the game is? I prefer to buy when the game is complete.

The full release isn't until next year, so they have plenty of content still to add.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
“Early Access will continue until the game is completed. Until then, we plan to release updates on a regular basis (usually around every two month). We target a final release for beginning 2017.”

I really really hate the way new Linux releases don't show up on Steam as new releases if they've been on Windows first. They must fix this. No wonder some of these smaller devs suffer when porting to Linux and getting not enough exposure.

This very site just ran two articles covering three games I'd never heard of - I've just bought one of them (Quest of Dungeons) and plan to buy another at the end of the month (VoidExpanse).

Steam is a bit of a mess right now regarding Linux support. It took them over a year to fix a paging issue on upcoming releases, new releases don't care about extra SteamPlay platforms being added, hardware surveys are a mess and now they're launching their entire VR strategy as a Windows only deal, ignoring their OWN platform.

It feels like they've really dropped the ball.

[Edit: Forgot to mention, I just got a key through Kickstarter to this (despite voting that we shouldn't be given EA at the tier-level I pledged in, as I felt it was unfair to those who paid extra for the "beta") and I'm just not interested. Looking forward to playing the finished product though, but can't be bothered with EA/beta access.]

I spy with my little eye standard tilesets. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just long for the days of Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy VI/Seiken Densetsu 3, when 16-bit sprites were an artform.

I totally missed this article going up (and forgot to post an article about it back in February).

I helped the developer out with the Linux and Mac ports. Hope that anybody who has checked the game out, or has plans to do so later, finds something they enjoy :)
