Crytek Aren't Taking Any Prisoners, Announcing CRYENGINE As A Service

By - | Views: 8,352
So, with Unity upgrades costing a small fortune and Epic Games releasing Unreal Engine 4 for a monthly fee, Crytek has one-upped them both by "doing an Epic" and announced CRYENGINE for $9.90/9.90EUR a month under-cutting Unreal Engine.

Competition is an amazing thing isn't it, now what engine will developers pick? All are major game engines and all support Linux.

Crytek say their SDK will still be free, but if people want the newer more advanced features they will need to cough up the cash.

Crytek's "Engine-as-a-Service" (EaaS) program starts in May this year.

The wording in Crytek's official statement is odd. Since they are EU obviously they used a comma instead of a decimal point. So in USD it *may* be in the $14.00 range, instead of a flat 9.90 rate.

Just a note: VAT should be deductible for companies developping games, so it could be just a financial issue (VAT must be advanced and sometimes it takes time to obtain the refund or to offset that input VAT with output VAT), not a real cost. That's why sometimes professional services' prices are advertised "VAT excluded".

You missed the big price difference: the CryEngine is royalty-free.

10 bucks a month for this engine? Not a fortune.
