Crytek In Trouble, Could Be Bad News For Homefront On Linux

Lots of reports across the interwebs recently are about Crytek the creators of CRYENGINE being in financial trouble. They are the developers bringing the new Homefront: The Revolution FPS game to Linux.

I held off writing about this previously as it seemed a bit iffy with rumours coming in about Crytek being in some sort of trouble, but now there are reports of Crytek's UK based office having workers not being payed for some-time and now around 100 staff members walking out of work and not coming back. This is very sad news and I cannot think of any other reason for staff not getting paid other than Crytek really being in trouble.

We really need Crytek to stay in the game as they are an important engine for developers looking to support Linux in future. Not to mention we don't want everything to fall on Unity (oh god no) and Unreal Engine, as the more competition in the market the better all the game engines will be as they face off against each other.

Crytek of course put out a statement denying they are in any kind of trouble, but for them to repeatedly not pay or be late paying employees and for nearly an entire office to walk out based on pay then something's up. Considering the UK studio is the one responsible for the new Homefront this is worrying indeed.

Well, Crytek (the main company) has had difficulties these last years with games selling far less than expected (Crysis 2, Ryse...) and buying a lot of other dev studios. So it's not really a big surprise.
There are rumours about Deep Silver buying Crytek UK (and probably completing the development of Homefront 2).

Although I am hoping that Crytek UK stays with Crytek, Deep Silver has proven to be quite Linux friendly, so Linux support will surely continue for Homefront: The Revolution.

The question will be if CryTEC will finish the engine port.

For Crytec itself... well, we'll see about it. They've had a lot of big AAA titles not selling well enough, so I can imagine them in difficulties (those productions cost a few million after all). Though, a company as CryTEC either finds an investor or somebody taking over the company. The question will be how linux-friendly they'd be, because that's still an adventure. But my guess is, that without full platform support, engines won't license in future as well as those supporting all platforms since the game developers often rather take the 1 % more in sales than not, and if the engine is good, the porting efforts are not too high and will still pay off.

Even if they do finish it and release it for Linux, letting that many people go in the middle of development can seriously hurt the quality of the game.

I was really positively surprised by what they showed at E3, I don't want to be negatively surprised once it's actually out.

Naturally, Crysis 2 and Ryse were bad games.

I beg to differ. I thought Crysis 2 was an excellent game and one of the best FPS of the year it came out, but it was no surprised that it sold less than Crysis 1.

And I find it strange that you "know" a game is going to suck when you haven't even played it yet.

Yep, I'm glad someone else is sticking up for Crysis 2. It improved on Crysis 1 in every possible way - better engine, graphics, better (if still silly) plot, fantastic set pieces, stealth that worked. It was superb.

It wasn't quite as long. Or perhaps it was a similar length, but I was more familiar with the tactics - I finished Crysis 2 in 10.5 hours, while the original took me 12. Similar to Metro:LL.

I wonder how this affects Star Citizen? Will they still be able to offer Linux support if Crytek fold?

WTF, Crysis 2 was a bad game? Get outta here. It is my favourite shooter of recent years.
And the multiplayer in that game were awesome.

There will not be problem for Star Citizen and Kingdom Come: Deliverance because the CryEngine is already available for the dev.

imo Crysis 1, 2 were bad games and what I have read from the third one so far doesn't make it any better. I think I'd rather play another CoD game (which isn't fun either)

I mean the graphics were really nice but the gameplay sucked like hell.
