Daedalus [Kickstarter] is yet another space sci-fi game on Kickstarter that promises Linux support. The developer told me that Linux is for sure a release platform.

It's a nice trailer that caught my eye, but I need to see something properly in-game for me to be personally interested in it.

Their goal is $55,492 and right now they only have $4,804 pledged, but they do have 29 days still to go. It's possibly they could hit it, but they will need a surge in pledges to hit it. I think showing more of the game would really help them here, there just isn't enough to go on for me personally.

If funded, they are aiming to release the first episode in September 2017.

Now, onto why it's a bit iffy: It's from the same developer as "After Reset RPG", an Early Access game that supports Linux. A small studio who haven't finished their first game (and it doesn't have the best reviews) is on Kickstarter for another game. Something about this doesn't sit right with me and does not give me confidence.

About the game
Daedalus – is a thriller hard sci-fi adventure video game. You play an astronaut aboard the Daedalus Space Station, a man plagued by prophetic nightmares of death and destruction. You tell yourself they are only dreams, but after the first crewmate dies… what will you tell yourself then?

The game takes place in the hard sci-fi After Reset™ universe. In the 22nd century, several years before the "Reset" (a thermonuclear apocalypse that nearly ended human civilization), the crew aboard the Daedalus Space Station is eager to return home from a yearlong orbital exploration of Venus and Sun. Only thirty days remain until the next crew rotation, but Matt Cramer, an astronaut from the crew, begins to has unnatural dreams full of horrors that are about to become a reality. My interpretation of the situation going on what the developer has said on the Steam community: they plan to be releasing the first part of the first game soon or in the next few weeks; the timing of this Kickstarter is such that it will complete and they will get funds for further development after that release has happened.

I've checked in with the After Reset community on Steam fairly regularly over the last year or so. I don't think it's an out and out scam, I do think the developer is trying to build a game that is beyond the resources he has available (what's slated to release shortly for After Reset is the Prologue, i.e. less than a fifth of the planned game). Don't back this new project and expect to see tangible results anywhere close to the proposed deadlines.

I agree that the trailer is lacking a lot. I mean, it's vague even for a movie trailer.

Also, they say "The visual style for the game will be like a graphic adventure [...] with painted 3d characters and environments [...]", but almost the whole trailer contained photorealistic graphics. Not so honest...

Note to author: please include a link to the Kickstarter page next time.

There have been too many kickstarter/pre-order related articles lately, imho.

Woops, fixed.

Someone is never happy :P. There has been 3 Kickstarter posts in the space of an entire week, is it really too many? I was specifically asked by Patreon supporters to mention some Kickstarters fyi.

I don't agree. I think they should cover all Linux-related stuff, no matter their type.
Plus, I do enjoy watching kickstarter campaigns unfold.

I believe he or they are good at drawing polished pictures. They released a graphic novel after all. I backed "After Reset" at Kickstarter. Last time I checked (about half a year ago) this "game" was a joke. It had a shiny Intro-Screen, then you do character creation with very much detail. After that your character wakes up in a laboratory or space station of some kind. You can walk floors, open doors to rooms, walk around some more, nothing else. Doors open, doors close, you walk, open drawers, take things, thats it. Everytime the "game" got updated they polished the animation of the Intro-Screen some more, adjusted fonts, put different things in drawers, or something like that. Every once in a while Richard Nixon (the owner) complained about bad hired programmers, showed a miserable 3d model of some 3d party artist. Then someone stole Kickstarter money and whatnot..
The "game" costs 46€ on early access by the way. Then (for me) out of a sudden it is announced that the latest patch will be the last before release. A few days later they announce a new Kickstarter campaign for a new game..

The biggest joke is this:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blackcloudstudios/after-reset-rpg-rebooted/posts/1704731

In this update they're telling indie developers how its done.. unbelievable..

Supplement: I now checked out the latest version of it... Same rooms. You can now use some of the things you find. In my opinion they have serious problems with the simplest of animations. If you for example want to take an apple from a table, your character bends over to the floor and the apple magically disappears off the table. Also the character does some simple kind of moonwalk instead of walking, getting really slow when walking around objects, with no change in step length and frequency, his feet just gliding back on the floor. So there is not really much to see at all, and what you can see looks pre alpha at best!
I was about to just delete the "game" from my steam account, but now I'll wait if it ever gets released, and if so what it will look like. If that happens I'll write a review...

off topic but based on your intervention on White Noise 2 that was fixed after you put some attention here on the blog... could you post something about SNOW it's on early access but it has been broken since day one.

Well, that was as a result of me talking to them directly, but I will see what I can do.
