Looks like Bad Juju's acquisition of Desura will pay off for us Linux gamers soon. They tweeted to let people know the Desura client updates are currently in testing!

It's really great to see them deliver on promises, as Linden Lab really didn't do much for Desura at all. If anything Linden Lab ruined the open source Desurium project for contributors by forcing a contributor agreement, and so Linden Lab couldn't use all the changes if people didn't agree to it, and they didn't. Bad Juju have a lot of catching up to do.

It will be good to install the Desura client again, as the current and very outdated official client was riddled with bugs. The open source Desurium was much better of course, but it's also outdated and unmaintained.

Good timing, since Desurium is no longer launching for me on Arch.

We still need to see how Bad JuJu are planning on dealing with the licensing though.

good to see some progress.
would be a nice fix if you had the chance to get released steamkeys also in the linux desura client, and not only in the windows client (so not at all for me) when it isn't listed in the browser collection.

Excellent! I have a lot of games on Desura that I don't have, otherwise. I haven't been able to use Desura for a while, due to the stability issues.

I had to use Desurium to even be able to log in and see anything but a black window. If they do update the Desura Linux client, huzzah!

For all the press that Steam is currently getting (deservedly), I have not forgotten that Desura supported Linux first. They still are the official source of and have the official Dominions 4 forums. Illwinter, the 2 man developer team, had a bad relationship with Shrapnel, the publisher of Dominions 3, even though DOM 3 was their best-selling game by far.

Just so you know Ownership of Desura was recently changed to a different company that said they were working to make sure that the client got fixed.

As stated in this article "Linden Lab really didn't do much for Desura at all. If anything Linden Lab ruined the open source Desurium project for contributors by forcing a contributor agreement, and so Linden Lab couldn't use all the changes if people didn't agree to it, and they didn't. I guess I just feel like trying to rub the current state of things in their face is a little rude when they are making it clear that they know and are working on it.

Sorry for the trolling in here unannounced... Just wanted to let you know we fixed the licensing issues as well. If anyone is interested the OFFICIAL version that we decided to run with (for a variety of reasons) is Open Source and you'll see we are back to GPLv3 (and no, we aren't asking contributors to fill out a CLA either): https://github.com/desura/desura-app

So, indeed to quote one astute poster the "Desura Client sucks" is an accurate statement; and not to make excuses for the past, it is something of a historic mess and drama. We just simply don't do drama at Bad Juju; so everything is back to how it was before (as best as possible). NOW, we have an absolute TON of catchup to do...

Bad Juju has officially had Desura for about 5 1/2 weeks now (not counting a week lost to Thanksgiving). Since then we have: Modified the site for usability, updated the branding, switched over all payment systems, migrated off 20 servers to the AWS Cloud, moved 20 TB of games & history, released an updated Windows Client, undergone a total financial audit and went to beta with an updated Linux Client. Total downtime: About 4 minutes.

Needless to say we are busy and will keep on delivering -- Linux, Windows and Mac are all important to us. I understand that some people prefer the "over the top" method of telling us to get our 'act' together (my euphemism) - no worries - We've got thick skin. But, we're taking it day by day and I plan to enjoy the holidays with the family at the same time!

In any event, I should say that if you are going to use the client -- The new client coming out will be absolutely necessary. We implemented Amazon Cloudfront for our CDN and a lot of the stuff necessary at the client level to properly support Desura Users and Developers just made a client update absolutely mandatory.

At any rate, feel free to hit me up if ever you have a complaint, gripe or issue -- Or even just to say hi. We are pretty open here at Bad Juju being Indie Devs ourselves. Thanks to everyone for caring and reading my little novel here.

Regards,

Tony Novak
