Dota 2 Managed To Hit Over 1 Million Players

Dota 2's popularity is still continuing to surge, and it has recently hit a new milestone of over 1 million players.

It's actually the first game on Steam to ever reach this new height:

Dota 2 is the first game on Steam to have over 1,000,000 players online at a time. https://t.co/8ElvO1cmb7 pic.twitter.com/ATHnr4DCwY

This is still dwarfed by League of Legends which doesn't have a Linux version, but it's starting to properly gain on it now.

The count for the last month's unique players is over 10 million too, so the game is extremely healthy.

Some personal thoughts
I gave up playing Dota 2 due to the absolutely terrible community. For a game that requires a good team to play together, the constant quitters and rather angry people do ruin the experience.

The major frustration for me comes from when you get matched with people who don't speak your language, and they proceed to constantly yell at you in their chosen language. You also do get a fair few trolls playing who do some pretty silly things; stealing the courier from you when you have an urgent item on its way is one such example.

If you have a full party of friends this can make the game a pretty fun place to be, so it certainly can be enjoyed with a proper team.

Do you play it? How do you feel about the community? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Terrible community dota 2 perhaps, but atleast in my experience League of legends was even worst these types of moba's bring out the worst in people at times even though they are fun too play.

So maybe you should try other MOBA for Linux with better community (in my opinion) like HoN and Strife.

I've had few bad experiences in Dota 2, have you tried playing with friends instead of random strangers?

Are you serious? HoN community is the WORST by FAR, and I know what I'm talking about I've played that game for years, I just made the switch to dota 2 because I find the community way more respectful.
Strife is S2's attempt to minimize reasons to be angry at teammates (like spliting gold to allies when last hitting, or removing wards of vision so we don't blame supports for not buying those, etc…) , but that's nothing but a copy/pasting of league of legend.

Really, I have seen irrespectful people on dota 2, but not with a probability of 1/2 games like HoN, maybe 1/5 or such

Maybe age groups should be matched together. Or maybe just 2 groups. Teenagers and non teenagers :)

I respect valve for supporting Linux platform in Dota 2. I even played it few times. But I just did not like that it had so big learning curve (I played LoL before) an I just could not stand how the heroes look.

Honestly I think it is a common place to say that the dota community is the worst thing. I used to play wow in wine until I definetely quitted all not native linux games and I couldn't tell any difference in the communities. Just like anywhere else, there are nice and not so nice people.

And about the language problems... you just have to accept that there a lot of different languages in the world and nobody can speak all of them, so sooner or later you'll meet someone who can't understand. It is just the way it is, and it's actually a good thing.

As I started to play Strife with a premade friend the rest of my team was less good than we/ really really bad. That may have been change because I didnt played Strife for 1/2 year.

Sadly, Strife seems to have a player draught, myself and Samsai tried and failed at finding a game last night :(
