Dwarf Fortress Sees First New Release In 2 Years

Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. The kicker is that the graphics are all text, no actual graphics. There are of course mods to make it graphical however.

I have to say I don't get the fuss at all with this one. The interface is confusing and it's not nice to look at, but I am guessing with plenty of graphical mods it could get pretty good considering everything you can do in it. I understand it will have a massive amount of replayability due to generating a new world each time, but it just doesn't look inviting to someone who hasn't played a game like it before.

This new release is the first in 2 years and has massive changes as you might imagine. See the full rundown here.

What do people see in it exactly? I know plenty of you play it as the amount of people to email it in was crazy. I'm just going to sit back and let the "omg your crazy" comments come in. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

It's really complex and deep features wise. You hang on to the primitive UI, but didn't really pay attention to the rest of it. That's kind of the point - Dwarf Fortress put an effort into developing deep features (interacting with the world and so on), and not into UI. That's weird, I agree, but it has its place.

Some interesting articles about it:

It's impossible to explain why DF is so awesome. On paper, it's an unintuitive, ugly, micromanagement-filled mess of complicated screens and monotonous tasks, coupled with a learning curve so steep that you can shave with it. The secret is ride out the learning curve and try not to be put off by the 'limitations'. There will come a time when it's suddenly 6am, and you're putting off sleep until you've seen off the invasion of Trolls and Goblins, tamed that Dragon you captured, upgraded all your military to steel armour, and fully mined that bituminous coal vein you found. It's impossible to explain why these things are important to you to anyone else.

Also, Boatmurdered.

0.40.02 was released this morning/yesterday night: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/index.html#2014-07-10

As noted by Toady, this new version breaks save compatibility, so you'll need to generate a new world (or stick with 0.40.01 and hope you don't experience the bugs he refers to).

Please read these articles by established mainstream press to just see the awsomeness of Dwarf Fortress:

This game is a labour of love....

And no so hard to get into. If you want to give it a go, I suggest that you watch one or two DarkDuck youtube tutorials.

If you really don't like the ASCII graphics, you can install TileSets, that improve visuals. There are even some for Linux: Lazy Noob Pack. Note that it seems you may have to find another source as the maintenance of that package is out of date. It will still work with previous versions of Dwarf Fortress.

Read some of the lore... Google Dwarf Fortress Comics, Boatmurdered, etc... go on the forum. There is such a great community. It is easy to loose oneself in it. The good thing is that this is a gem that is in for the long run.

And lastly, I always suggest to newcomers to the game to cap the population of dwarves to 20. This is easily done: edit data/init/d_init.txt and change the value of this line:
[POPULATION_CAP:200]. You will thank me for that, as beyond thatm, you will not know what is happening as there will be so many dwarves...

One guy even played the game with just ONE dwarf: One Dwarf at a time
