Egosoft have officially announced their latest space sim X4: Foundations is going to launch on November 30th, although the status of the Linux build isn't fully confirmed.

When asked about it, they simply told us "The plan is to launch the Linux Beta at release, but we have to see if that will work out.".

The announcement was accompanied by their new trailer:

They also released a longer gameplay trailer at the same time, which is an interesting way to do it I suppose. It's a game I definitely want to try out, as it does sound quite impressive. The ability to simply get out of your ship, walk around and climb aboard another ship and continue exploring sounds fun.

Egosoft are claiming it to be the "most dynamic X universe ever", with other races in the game free to build and expand, with a lot of the same options as players which should be interesting. It will offer multiple starting points with different characters, each with their own set of relationships, technology, ships and so on too.

The only current store they've confirmed is Steam. If they do manage to get a Linux build out, we will take a look for sure.

Quoting: GuestNot comparable. A few years ago the gpu market was more down to earth. These last 2-3 years gpu prices are ridiculously inflated due to ram prices, cryptomining, China growth, and newer processes being more difficult. It is RIDICULOUS to demand a 970 as a MINIMUM requirement. That card is more than midrange, it is borderline high range. At least from a price standpoint, if you are buying new. It is beyond retarded to demand such a strong pc as a MINIMUM requirement, because your potential market shrinks to a tiny percentage of PC users...

Also, these are the MINIMUM requirements. No game runs properly on MININUM, ever. You need at least the recommended to have a passable experience with a game. And judging by Egosoft's history of terribly unoptimized games, i am not hopeful. As for the graphics of the game, they are nothing special. Space graphics are easier to look amazing anyway.
Again it's indeed generally poorly optimized at first but they improve optimization over time. Even X-Rebirth performs way better now then it used to perform back then. Again the important part of my message was that Egosoft still maintains and continues to support their game waaay past the first few months of release.

Quoting: GrifterWhich order do you play the X games in? I bought X3: Reunion, X3: Terran Conflict and X3: Albion Prelude long ago but never got around to playing them, at the time I was hoping Egosoft would re-release their own X2 first, which sadly never happened. Is it still possible to get a hold of the old lgp x2? Would it even run today? But even if I skip X2, which order do I play all my X3s in?

Well, I'd usually recommend the most recent game first. But most people who hate Rebirth will probably start a flame thread :D .

In all honesty id wait for X4 that way you wont be having to relearn stuff having to deal with changes etc.
Otherwise some variation of X3.

For me at least the story wasn't memorable enough to bother to play all of the games. As in the most general terms the majority of the games are very samey except for a the departure to more of a combat roll in Rebirth.

With the amount of time you can sink into the game, the recommendation is pick the most recent for mechanics, graphics etc.

Interestingly, their system requirements list Vulkan for the Windows version: https://www.gog.com/game/x4_foundations

Minimum: Nvidia GTX 780/970 or AMD equivalent (Vulkan support required)
Recommended: Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD equivalent (Vulkan support required)

Though funny that they didn't bother to specify what the AMD equivalent is. That's not very user friendly.

You're right, this is too common. I'm sure they've tested on AMD, but this kind of makes you think that they haven't. I'd assume an RX 570 should be close to a GTX 780/970?

Nothing imminent. I think in the past the Linux versions of X games came out several months after initial launch, usually benefitting from all the bug fixes and tweaking of the Windows version. Sadly, the Windows version doesn't work with Steam Play, which is surprising as the Windows version works via Vulkan.
