Egosoft's X Rebirth Actively Being Ported To Linux

Egosoft have been detailing their porting X Rebirth to Linux with a series of forum posts. It's good to see them be open about it, and we look forward to testing it out.

The thread isn't a month old, but clearly details that the process is under-way. Interestingly, the developers seem to discuss some of the pros and cons of the various debuggers and tool-chains involved, as well. Nothing quite as exciting as the outcome of the work though.

Regardless of X-Rebirth's (apparent) rocky start, it will be fun to sink hours into, while waiting for Star Citizen and Elite:Dangerous to catch up!

It currently has "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam, so it seems there's a lot of unhappy people about the launch. The developers have put out multiple patches for fix issues, and the negative reviews are slowly turning to positive.

By the time it comes to Linux, it may actually be worth buying.

About the game (From Steam)
In the distant future, the X universe faces a period of profound and irrevocable change. While the universe stumbles towards an uncertain future, countless adventures await as new enemies rise in search of power. Enter a young adventurer and his unlikely female ally travelling in an old, battered ship with a glorious past - two people alone against the galaxy, playing a key part in the events to come. The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player...

X Rebirth represents a spectacular new beginning for the X series, offering loyal fans and newcomers alike a vast, vivid and extremely detailed universe to explore throughout the game. Varied gameplay elements such as action-packed space combat, detailed trading mechanics and high-speed space exploration with fast travel allow players to experience a truly unique space saga that will keep them hooked for dozens of hours. X Rebirth features a whole new user experience - it is easier than ever to start with, and remains as deep as fans expect it.

Will you be picking up a copy when it's released for Linux?

As Austing Powers would say, "This kinda thing is my bag, baby!" I do love space combat and trading games.

Wow, in order for those reviews to be negative, the gameplay must be really really bad or buggy, because the graphics are just fantastic.

Well, there's this review on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and that looks like it is quite bad...

About the porting: are they actually porting it themselves now? The earlier X games were ported by outside contractors and Egoraptor let those ports rot afterwards. I always hated them for that.

Weren't the Steam versions ported in-house? I thought I read so somewhere on the internet, but I may be mistaken...

Oh and as far as X:Rebirth is concerned, yes, it is in pretty bad shape, but Egosoft is known for improving their games over time... Hopefully they will correct this.

Awesome news, been wanting to try it. Hopefully it makes it's way to GOG or something similar as well.

I thought they took them away from LGP and then re-ported them? Or did they use an outside contractor again?

The DLC reviews offer a more up-to-date insight into the bug status of the game. Many say it has been fixed completely and the re-balancing has made the game more addictive and playable.

A welcome addition to the Linux fold!

Is rather an old review though, made when the game was released. From what I gather the game changed a lot since the release.

The forum post that Liam linked is a very interesting read about their current thoughts about Linux/OpenGL.

I don't think the elite is *that* mad :D

I've sunk a lot of hours into the previous X games so will almost definitely be getting this when it ports.
It's unlikely to be my go-to space aim though, with what is coming up. I have both fingers crossed for elite dangerous coming to Linux at some point, or at least being wine friendly, as I invested in the kickstarter.
