The philosophical first-person puzzle game from the developers of the Serious Sam franchise is due out at 20:00 UTC today and the game is already available for pre-loading. Developer Croteam has done a bang up job of building a community around the game through a series of contests and giveaways and I consider myself thoroughly hyped before launch.

Some of the bigger gaming news sites have gotten their hands on review copies and they all seemed to love what they've played. According to PCWorld's reviewer it's the best puzzler since Portal.

QuoteI consider it one of the best games of the year. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind.

VentureBeat noted that it might be a bit heavy on the narration for some in their review of the game, but praised the gameplay and went on to give it a 90/100 score.

QuoteOne of the better puzzle game presentations I’ve ever played.

We wrote about the free public test of the game when it was released last month. If you're still on the fence about the game, it might be an idea to download the public test on Steam to see how it performs on your system and to see if the game appeals to you. I had issues with low frame rate at first, but turning down the mouse sensitivity in game did wonders for me, and I was able to play through the public test with consistently good frame rate on my Nvidia powered laptop.

If you do plan on buying The Talos Principle, don't forget that playing the free companion puzzle game Sigils of Elohim gives you items and relics that you can use in The Talos Principle. Sigils of Elohim got a bit tedious too fast for my taste, but it is quite a challenge. And if you do get stuck, there are user guides available to help you through the most difficult challenges.

Official About

The Talos Principle is a philosophical first-person puzzle game from Croteam, the creators of the legendary Serious Sam games, written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (The Sea Will Claim Everything).

As if awakening from a deep sleep, you find yourself in a strange, contradictory world of ancient ruins and advanced technology. Tasked by your creator with solving a series of increasingly complex puzzles, you must decide whether to have faith or to ask the difficult questions: Who are you? What is your purpose? And what are you going to do about it?

Features:
  • Overcome more than 120 immersive puzzles in a stunning world.
  • Divert drones, manipulate laser beams and even replicate time to prove your worth - or to find a way out.
  • Explore a story about humanity, technology and civilization. Uncover clues, devise theories, and make up your own mind.
  • Choose your own path through the game's non-linear world, solving puzzles your way.
  • But remember: choices have consequences and somebody's always watching you.

Note that if you own Serious Sam 3: BFE, The Swapper or Antichamber on Steam, you get an additional 5% off on top of the 10% pre-order discount. Pre-ordering also gives you a copy of Serious Sam 3: BFE that you're free to gift if you already own the game.

So does anyone here plan on playing the game when it unlocks tonight? I know I will. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Just preordered that. They've done great teasing with the demo and their support and it looks like an interesting game, surely for the puzzles and hopefully for the background story. And due to the demo, I know that it will work.

Yep I will play it tonight, just pre-ordered ^^

Also thanks for all the news flesk :)

I'll buy this game for sure. I just need to get the games I'm currently playing behind me first.

I bought it after I tried the prerelease test and saw how great it was, though I also waited for a confirmation from the devs that it was indeed a Day-1 Linux release (or as they say, Day -1 counting the prerelease).
I first got interested in the game when I read that one of the writers also did The Swapper, which I found very compelling. It is nice to see games with a deeper and more 'mature' story that actually makes me want to read more about the subject, in this case psychology. Due to the 'recommended preliminary reading' topic on the Talos Steam forum I've got a few books on the science of consciousness which I am now struggling to understand.
I just hope the game can live up to its hype, but according to the reviews so far it seema it can!

Glad you like them. :)

Croteam just published a launch trailer for the game:

EDIT: Just replaced the teaser with the new launch trailer in the body of the article. Thanks for the suggestion, FutureSuture. :) If anyone didn't catch the teaser, it's embedded in the public test article.

I enjoyed the public test a lot. In fact, I enjoyed it so much, I preordered the game, which is something I rarely do. :D

I suggest you people try the public test demo. It's a fun portal like game.

Cam someone lend me the money for this? j/k I'll buy this as soon as I can though.

I really enjoyed the demo and love the concept for the game, but still think £27 is just asking a crazy amount for it. In my pre-PC days I would have had no problem paying that, but since on Steam you could buy at least 3 great games for that money, finding it harder and harder to part with my cash. I guess I'll wait a while, still really looking forward to it though :)

Quoting: GuestAgreed Segata… I’m not buying a puzzle game for that price. I’ll wait for a sub-15€ sale.

BTW The Swapper was great… until I got stuck. Never finished it and probably never will.

You should find a guide for the bit you're stuck on and give it a second chance :). I did get stuck a couple of times and it was worth consulting a guide. For me it was far more about the ambiance and the story than the puzzles, so didn't feel bad doing it. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed a lot of the puzzles, but they werent what made it a really rewarding game to play.

Running decently for me with all settings maxed with a GTX970 albeit on a single monitor. Frame rate is pretty erratic but it still feels smooth. Considering the old OpenGL version used the game looks really good. I can't help but think if they used a more modern version of OpenGL (they are using 2.something) performance would be much better... why on earth did they target such a low version?? Even Apple uses a MUCH newer version so I just don't get the reasoning. None the less Like I said it runs well enough.

I've got to finish FarCry4 before I really dive into this one though (about 70% through it). I'll play it for a while on Linux so that the sale is counted for Linux but ill more than likely finish it in windows due to no real SLI support in Linux yet and a single card is struggling to render it @ 5760x1080 without turning the settings down to the medium-ish range.

I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing(reading?) me complain about SLI, multi monitors and Linux.. Don't worry.. I complain to Nvidia too. I'm hoping that if I complain enough everywhere one day Nvidia will do the right thing and make it work. It is the single biggest thing other than some games not available to Linux that keeps me booting to windows to play more demanding titles.
