Fix up some pipes the puzzler game Flux Caves, now temporarily free

By - | Views: 13,001

Flux Caves is like playing with a massive set of marbles, only someone came along and pulled a bunch of pieces out and you have to put it back together.

Quite a relaxing puzzle game, not too taxing on the mind and it's quite nice to look at too. Watching the balls roll through the tunnels, as you appreciate a job well done on fixing it. It released earlier this year and it has Linux support, however like a lot of indie games it flew under the radar for most. Not seen it? There's a brief trailer you can see below:

It's not a particularly long game either, it can easily be beaten in only a few short hours.

The developer, Fubenalvo, has now decided to make it temporarily free on itch.io to download and keep. No catch, grab it, keep it. It will be that way until New Year's Eve, although you can donate to the developer if you appreciate it.

On Steam, the game price has also been reduced to £0.79/$0.99.

Free puzzle game for Linux? Sure, take my $2!

But then I tried to play it. Performance is terrible, somewhat playable on 'low' graphics, but it looks bad then. Ok, I have just a laptop (even if called 'gaming'), but for such a simple game it should be enough.

And then it crashed, just after solving the first puzzle… :-(

Not what I was hoping for.

Agree, it really is extremely sluggish, even at low settings, which takes most of the fun :(

Try adding "-force-glcore42" to your launch options. That fixes the performance (mostly) and stability problems for me.

From the itch.io page:

"For LINUX users: There are serious problems with the Linux version. I'm working on it, but until that I turn off the download option for that platform. Thank you for your patience!"

I note the Linux download is still available, so I'm not sure what the state of the game is supposed to be. It sounds like they may have missed actually disabling the download there though.

The problems amount to performance problems and instability using the default OpenGL backend and one glitchy shader as far as I can tell. The developer tried his best to fix it all, but I guess he couldn't get it all shipshape before he had to move on to his next project. Launch with -force-glcore42 and the game works just fine, at least for me.
