Free to play MMORPG Ryzom launches on Steam with Linux support

The classic MMORPG Ryzom has officially launched on Steam with full Linux support. This new release has a few updates to the old game too.

It has a bunch of graphical improvements like FXAA, anisotropic filtering, improvement of bloom. Improved security, OpenGL by default for all platforms, optimizations and much more. You can see what they added in here.

I've never tried it myself, so I will be giving it a download to see what it's like.

Ryzom characters are unusual in that they are not bound to a class. That means you don't have to choose between being a warrior, a mage, a harvester or a crafter. You can improve your skills in all these classes with only one character; you do not need to focus on one path. For example, you can, at your leisure, either train your pike handling, put on your magic amplifiers to heal or cast offensive spells, pick up your pickaxe and harvest materials, or go into crafting a new armor or weapon.
You have absolute freedom!

Just a general note: It's mostly open-source, but the audio assets and the story/gameplay scripts are not. Still a great pool of open source assets though.

It's just such a shame that this never really took off in open-source development. Sure, it got some improvements and works quite well on modern systems... but it's still essentially the same game with little custom made content or alternative open-source game servers etc.

I guess it is mainly due to the fact that it is just sooo outdated by today's standards that improving it in your free-time seems like an uphill battle Maybe a Android port and a VR version would help, as for those the relatively low-spec requirements actually help getting a larger community intersted.

Graphics, models, textures, shaders, etc. are outdated, I agree.

I read the server coding is quite advanced though. The UI is also fully modifiable.

I just wish modern RPGs had the same 'outdated' skill, gathering and crafting systems of Ryzom. There is A LOT to be learned from this game.

Well, I remember what was annoying on this game again. No streamlined process, hard to start with, and a mostly french speaking community not speaking with english speakers as it seems...

Just to put in my two cents...
I decided that, for F2P (with a lvl125 cap on skills), I'd give this game a go.

Graphically, I think the game is quite pleasing... definitely dated, but very pleasing. For a "sci-fi" game most everything has a very earthy tone to it (at least in the beginner area). That may or may not be appealing to some, but I find it quite relaxing.

The starter zone, currently, is active and the biggest thing that stands out to me is that most, if not all, of the conversations are mature and helpful. This last bit could be that most who're interested in playing this game are either long time Ryzom players or long time MMORPG players that preferred the older EQ1 generation of games.

The thing I love most about the game so far... Creating Skills! Other's have mentioned this as a point of interest, and I'm no different. I LOVE this aspect. I'm still learning all of the beginner stuff, so I've only just been introduced to it, but... I freaking LOVE the idea! Add to that the depth of the crafting system... Mmmmm

I've only had the chance to play a total of maybe three or four hours of the game so far, over at least three sessions. I found that, when I had the chance, I actually was looking forward to logging into the game. I can be a little OCD with games, and only a few rare ones can keep my attention for too long. I'm not saying this game is one of those... yet... but it has serious potential.

The game's been around for a while now, so it probably won't out right disappear any time soon, but the one worry I have is, Steam is giving the game an influx of players currently, but I can't tell how much staying power the game will have in the end. I do worry about getting into an online game that, only a few months down the road may become a ghost town. To this, I can only cross my figures.
