Game Develop Game Creation Kit Becomes Open Source

By - | Views: 11,622
In a very surprising move Game Develop a game creation engine that doesn't require programming has become open source. This is after the failed Indiegogo campaign, but it still happened anyway. Hooray!

The developer emailed it in to point out the announcement in their forum that can be found here.

I've said it before and will say it again. We need tools like this as they are extremely popular in the Windows world with tools like Clickteam's Fusion and Scirra's Construct 2 leading the crop. This move could see Game Develop become a seriously good tool.

You can check it out on github right now. There are three different licenses for different parts:
- The IDE (in the IDE folder) is licensed with GPL v3.
- The Core library, the native and HTML5 platforms (respectively Core, GDCpp and GDJS folders) are LGPL v3.
- Extensions (in the Extensions folder) are using zlib/libpng license.
- The name, Game Develop, and its logo are the exclusive property of Florian Rival.

You can see an example video of it in use here:

I hope some Linux programmers pick it up and help improve it across the many distributions as that's one thing the main developer struggled with before. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I've created a stupid package for ArchLinux (game-develop-deb).
You can try it via AUR...
Anyway I'm almost a noob in packaging, so some things may not work or be buggy...

Could be linked to the guy starting development work on a mobile development platform.
