GOL Cast: Sipping On Absinthe in Spate

By - | Views: 9,430
Sipping on absinthe in a dark and potentially dangerous place doesn't seem like a good idea. But then again Spate is already pretty weird, so why not spice it up a bit more? Let's see what this piece of mystery and weirdness has to offer.

Spate from Avvo Games is a rather traditional action-adventure platformer, but it differentiates itself from its competition by being, well, quite strange. Spate tells a story of a detective who goes looking for a business man who went missing on a mysterious area that is simply called the X Zone. It's also worth mentioning that the detective's daughter has recently died and he uses absinthe as his method of fighting the pain. That is the explanation for the game's trippy nature.

The game describes itself as a mix of Dear Esther and Mario and I can agree with that. It's mysterious and looks good and has the mechanics of a typical platformer. I sort of like it, but I'm not so sure about all the weirdness this game throws at you. I guess if you take it humorously it might be fun, but the nature of the game I seems serious and even depressive. It's definitely interesting though.

Good cast, Samsai. Worth a look, I think, but I've still to get into Glare and this looks like bizarre cross between Glare and Limbo. There's a wee hint of the Bastion narrator in there too, I reckon!

I'll get my "unplayed" games list down a bit, then I'll give this a go.
