Half-Life 2: Update, A Community Made Graphical Revamp Released For Linux

Posted by , | Views: 11,569
The big community made update to Half-Life 2 is now available on Linux. This promises lots of new goodies for the ageing game.

You can see a comparison here:

The changes actually make the game world feel a lot less empty, and that's really great. Maybe I will finally put more than 2 hours into the game. Something about it just never clicked with me.

About the mod
2004's Half-Life 2 was a landmark for PC gaming and the First Person Shooter, setting the standard for immersion, animation, and physics-based play for years.

Meticulously developed by Half-Life community member Filip Victor, Half-Life 2: Update offers both long-time fans and first time players the most visually advanced, stable, and fully-featured version of Half-Life 2 to date in one free mod download.

Check out Half-Life 2: Update on Steam.

Can anyone tell me how this compares to FakeFactory's Cinematic Mod? I got rid of Wine completely about 18 months ago and CM for HL2 is the only thing I miss...

I'd also have an eye on the fantastic HL2 single-player mod Transmissions - Element 120

http://www.moddb.com/mods/transmissions-element-120

They're looking for developers to bring the mod to Linux & Mac.

HL2 is a good game, but there's not as much action as you'd expect from other FPS titles. Definitely more story and puzzles in trade of action. If you have spare time and nothing else to play, I'd say it's worth getting into.

I played HL2 for the first time this year and the graphics made great impression on me. I enjoyed it like a new game.

Am I the only one to spot no real difference between the original and the updated version?
Ok, the shadows and the water are better, but this does not "make the game feel less empty"... This is just a small update.

I mostly like Half-Life for the story. If you've never seen this it's a lot more in-depth than you might have realized just by playing the games.
The concept of the combine and their methods of enslaving worlds is pretty neat.

I think they've done a good job of maintaining a certain feeling you get while playing the games that they managed to keep alive in all the HL games so far.
I'm almost worried that it might be too much for valve to pull it off for a 3rd time. Maybe it's better without a 3rd installment no matter how badly I might want it.

I was thinking the same thing at first, but did you watch the whole video? It's like they saved all the best comparisons for the end or something. Also setting the video to HD helps.

Looking at this (though the improvements are very nice) just shows how ahead of its time HL2 really was, it hasn't really aged that badly at all. Might use the new graphics as an excuse to re-play it though

I know I always post these, but there was a Zero Punctuation review on the re-make:
