Heavy Gear Assault update adds in bots

By - | Views: 8,859
Heavy Gear Assault [Steam] just got a little less lonely, as bots can now populate servers to keep games going. This was needed, as the online play is sadly pretty empty right now.

Sadly though, I went online earlier to test it out hoping to finally get some proper gameplay impressions, but the bots must have been hiding as I didn't see a single one.

Mechanically, the actual movement of the mechs feels pretty good and graphically the game is very pretty, I just wish it was more populated. I want to get a real feel for the combat, but there's simply not enough people.

The game still has plenty of issues, one of which being the UI doesn't seem to quite match up with the cursor position on Linux. This makes interacting with the menu quite the pain. On top of that, the online play is still sadly barren, so I really hope they work on some proper single-player.

Steam's screenshot tool also seems to just make black shots, which is annoying.

They also introduced a new weapon, the flamer:

Hopefully as the game development continues and once it exits Early Access the player base will increase. For now though, I think it's one to sit on since you can't really do much. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Personally I think it's madness from a indie company to make an online/competitive game only. As a game mode, sure go ahead, maybe even the main attraction, but make sure there are single player content there as well. Don't make your game totally dependent on others to succeed.

It can work, by all means, there are examples of that. But usually it doesn't and leaves a lot of disappointed purchasers. The critical minimum of active players for it to work is really quite high, because of timezones and the fact that nobody hangs online for long if there are no activity, making it hard to accumulate players for online matches.

I, sadly, agree a lot. It takes a lot for a new online game to become popular, you have to have a very polished base right away or the majority of people will try it a few times and probably not come back.

I really want a decent mech combat game, which is why I hope the HGA developers can quickly get the game up to scratch.

The bots are terrible.

First match yesterday: Bots on my side standing midmap, waiting.
I ran all the way to the enemy base: all 4 enemy bots in a row behind some pillar. After 5 seconds the last one 'noticed' me and blasted my ass.
- respawn - back to the entrance, got killed in an instant again. - WTF?
Same on another server. They are either bugging around or killing you in an instant.

I'm totally stoked about the addition of bots in the game! Some servers have bots and some don't. I've personally been pretty impressed by the bots. They do alot of awesome things already. Its a marked improvement over bots in other UE4 games I've played. I think it will only get better with time. Great patch!
