Continuing my effort to find fun games to play and to help you sift through the junk, I recently tried out ‘Hunger Dungeon’ [Steam]. It’s a free to play 1-6 player online battle arena, and it’s not too bad.
Note: You will need to open port 7777 to play online.
It’s a round based battle arena, where the winner of each round gets the key to open a door to choose the next level. You start off by purchasing any skills you wish to use before entering each round, which is nice as I like customization.
The tutorial is pretty underwhelming, but if you bare with it just enough to get the basics to play properly online, you might find something you like here.
It’s a real button-basher, a lot of it is frantic mouse clicking to smack your enemies while you wait for skill cooldowns to finish. Try to push them into lava while you avoid their attacks, beat up the monsters on the level to get food to replenish your health and gold to buy/level up skills.
It’s free to play, but it currently has a ‘Deluxe Edition’ that will give you all 12 characters. As far as funding models go, it’s not bad. You all get to play together, there’s no pay to win, and it has some fun ideas. It seems they rotate the free characters too, so you get to try out all the characters for free eventually.
On the final level you beat shards out of people to activate the teleporter to leave. The problem is, when you’re trying to activate the teleporter, someone, or everyone, can come inside the circle you stand in and knock you out stopping you from winning. It’s in everyone’s interest at that point to solely focus on you, which actually makes it somewhat amusing and utterly frantic to play.
It’s needs work though, as it has some glaring errors in the English text, one bit I reported has already been fixed, so they are at least highly responsive to feedback which is refreshing to see.
The combat can feel a little slow, personally I feel they need to up the movement speed for all characters a little bit. Then it would feel a lot better.
Overall, for a free game, it’s not actually too bad.
