For those interested in trying out Google Stadia, the new streaming service, today Google held their first Stadia Connect to give out some details. Quick reminder: Stadia is the game streaming service powered by Debian Linux and Vulkan. It’s supposed to offer a “single click” experience with “no downloading required”.

On the subject of pricing: They will have a Stadia Pro subscription at $9.99/£8.99 a month which gives you up to 4K resolution with regular free games and discounts. They will also do Stadia Base with no monthly sub that will come "next year" limiting you to 1080p, both allowing you to buy games whenever you want.

However, it seems only those who purchase the special Founders Edition will get access sometime in November. This includes first access to Stadia, a Chromecast Ultra, limited edition Stadia Controller, 3 months of Stadia Pro, a guest pass to give access to a friend and the Complete Edition of Destiny 2.

First set of games includes: Baldur’s Gate III (Larian Studios) was newly announced - Trailer, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Gylt, Get Packed, The Division 2, Destiny 2, DOOM Eternal, Football Manager 2020, GRID, Metro Exodus, The Elder Scrolls Online, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Tomb Raider Trilogy, Borderlands 3 and more.

A pretty interesting line-up and there’s more they’re going to announce later, that’s just all they’re teasing for now. They also reiterated wide support for different game pads, not just their own.

If you want to play at 1080p, Google are saying you will need a 20Mbps connection. That actually seems quite low, but even so the bandwidth use that will come along with it will likely be massive. If your connection is a bit wobbly, Stadia will keep your progress for "several minutes".

As for availability, they're launching in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, USA and the United Kingdom. They say more countries will come in 2020 too.

See more at the official Stadia website and their FAQ here.

I found it quite amusing that the video kept dying on me (seems for others too), after Google's recent outage it doesn't exactly fill me with confidence about buying AAA titles to stream them through Google's network.

I remain unconvinced by it, especially now we know we will be buying games as well and you're locked to 1080p unless you also pay a monthly subscription. Buying a game, to have no real access to it with Google controlling every part of it? I mentioned before I didn't particularly like the idea of even less ownership but with a Netflix-like subscription model it might have made more sense but not if you're still paying full price.

I will add more details as I look over it all.

how do you think a game knows, when you get a achievement?

Not quite the same.
Googles business model is to sell your data for profit.
Valves business model is to sell games to you.
The latter is inherently less disingenuous.

With Stadia, Google gets yet another privacy invasive way to monitor their users. Sure, some games might not give them much, while others might give them a ton of info about who you are. They even have their own game studio now so imagine if they designed a game specifically to gather as much data about you as possible. Why not? That is their main revenue stream after all.

what does google see? when and which game i am playing? steam also has this data, even if you are offline

Technically they can see how you play. Whether you go the pacifist route or go full genocide run. Then they can decide (probably incorrectly) what kind of person you are and share that with other people/organisations that should not know that. Just an option.

same with steam
how do you think a game knows, when you get a achievement?

which game do you have in mind?
i mean i kill everything in rage 2....
i threw torches at random ppl in assassins creed.
if you are playing hatred, or postal.............. everyone knows what you are doing

That only shows that it's possible. Feed a specialized AI with lots and lots of data and you get a little more than achievements. Don't get me wrong. I don't think they think badly of you when you do this and that, or they tell anyone what you did. The might just use your portion of the data to find out in more detail how we humans tick, to use the information to do .. whatever they find appropriate.
Valve uses achievements, because users like them, and to improve their shop, including information about the games you like. Selling or abusing user data is not in their history, nor is it in their privacy policy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7sl507GSrw

you just cant hide or are you guys all using proxies, tor, fake mails, never buy anything online

once the data is out..... it is out and it doesnt matter anymore

i understand your concerns, but it is way too hard to hide a digital fingerprint, so fuck it.

Okay, that's your opinion and your choice, but I think it's important that it's brought up so that people understand what they're getting into with Stadia. Personally I've de-Googled myself almost completely except watching videos on YouTube so it's natural for me to be sceptic about getting into Stadia.

so you dont have a phone? or do you trust apple more than google?
also everything is connected. you dont have to go to google.com to let google know sth about you

who knows.. maybe this side is on a google server, or you have to use some google traceroute to get here, you pressed play on an embedded youtube video.... baammm they got you

they know your IP, with that they know in which city you are, they can look up what this IP did in the past.... lets say 1 hour..... they see you used youtube, and so on..... they made a fingerprint of you

the only way to avoid this is, to use proxies.... change your IP for every website you visist.... NEVER log in anywhere

A de-Googled Android-phone running LineageOS :)

I know I'm not completely isolated from Google, but I like to keep whatever I'm giving them to a bare minimum.

For pretty much every service Google provides there are decent privacy focused alternatives. Just Nextcloud alone is able to replace a whole bunch of Google services like e-mail, cloud storage, contacts, calendar, chat etc...

https://www.pcworld.com/article/3401136/destiny-2-is-coming-to-steam-in-september.html

Will it support linux (Stadia build)? Will the Windows version run on Vulkan? Will it be playable with Proton?
Not my kind of game, but it's still a big title... No? I'm not familliar with the game.

Baldur's Gate III on Steam too... It's probably just that, but the coincidence makes me wonder.

its F2P and stadia is also free. i am not sure if it makes any sense to make F2P games for any other platform than stadia... maybe for slow internet connections

but if you have like 50mbit, why would you download it? you have to be online... duuuhhh when you wanna play it, it takes 0 space on your drive (steam says 105 GB), its completely silent, you dont have to pay for higher power consumption

if stadia is really that cheap, SHADOW will have a hard time

Still... Lots of Stadia and Steam simultaneous announcements... Won't it give have an indication of the impact of Stadia, on Linux desktop support? That's just what I meant. Didn't see any Stadia+Epic announcements. Just crossing my fingers. :)

I actually don't have a phone, but not because of data worries, just because I'm cheap (and like not being bothered when I'm out for a walk or something).
But I do trust Apple more than Google on this kind of issue. It has been pointed out to me that Apple's motivation is somewhat different from Google's--Apple (like Valve actually) is in the business of selling things to customers, so what matters is that the customers should be happy with the things. Google, as Brisse pointed out upthread, is in the business of selling users' data to their real customers. So what has to matter to them isn't us, it's the outfits they're selling the data to. This explains why Apple actually has been quite obdurate about building many of their devices with technology that makes breaking into privacy quite difficult.

Privacy, manipulation, world conquest. Very interesting points of view here.

So, when do we get Nekopara on Stadia?

Nextcloud has a mail server now? That's interesting.
