Linux May Gain Rebellion As A Developer & Publisher In Future

By - | Views: 19,278
I had a chance to talk to Rebellion on the possibility of them supporting Linux in the future, and the reply was actually quite encouraging. I spoke to Robbie Cooke, the Marketing & PR Coordinator at Rebellion, who allowed me to share this:

Robbie Cooke, RebellionHi Liam, Thanks for getting in touch – none of our games work on Linux yet, but we are tweaking our Asura game engine (used in all our in-house games) to work with Open GL (bear with me, I’m a PR person, not technical ;) in the future, so hopefully we’ll have Mac and Linux ports of Rebellion games in the future.

When asking about their current plans:

Robbie Cooke, RebellionHi Liam, As an indie studio and big PC developer we like to support as many platforms- and therefore gamers - as we can. We’re very much looking at Mac and Linux, and we recently attended the Steam Dev Days presentation about Steam boxes.

This is really encouraging as Rebellion are another big name (and a UK developer woohoo), they created games for the Aliens vs Predator franchise, the Sniper Elite games, Star Wars games and a lot more.

I was hoping that SteamOS and Steam Machines would have this effect on developers, so it is pleasing to see.

Will be keeping an eye on them. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Oh that would be cool, AVP would be awesome and I have yet to play the sniper zombie games but I own at least one of them.

Oh, I LOOOVE Rebellion games.

Will probably never happen, but a Linux version of Judge Dredd with full widescreen support - would make this old man very happy.

A few years ago, any suggestion of releasing on Linux would have been laughed at. It's amazing that perceptions are changing

I would love to see AVP and Evil Genius on Linux :D

Also Sniper Elite v2 looks nice.

I hope they will be able to port their games properly :)

I think Sniper Elite v2 would probably be their best candidate for a first port, but I'd love to see some of their older games as well -- Evil Genius would be so sweet!

I was developing on Linux at Rebellion back in the 90s. Targetting both Linux and DOS, and later Windows, (and some consoles), because Linux provided the better development environment. We started on Slackware, lots of building tools from sources. NFS and Samba to hook up developer machines, eventually CVS for version control. I managed Rebellion's first network too :)

The games and engines were some really cool stuff, quite state of the art for its time, and the artwork was very funky too. I screwed up getting projects completed due to inexperience, but the Linux side of things worked really well. A team-mate completed one of the games but it was sadly not released except as PR demos. I miss not having either that demo or the video they made, because that's the only evidence of my work in that era.

I think they would only have released DOS/Windows versions despite the existence of good quality Linux versions - "no commercial benefit" to releasing for Linux at the time. There was no useful OpenGL in those days (except on SGI - they had one of those too).

To think, I asked them awhile back and never got a response. Haha, still good to hear though.
