Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones [Official Site] from developer Cultic Games is promising a mix of rich RPG world building and turn-based tactical combat.

It was actually funded on Kickstarter back in 2016 and it seems this is one game we actually missed. They've now announced a publshing deal with 1C Company and Linux is a confirmed platform for release.

There's also a video of their crafting system and an actual video of the gameplay from earlier this year. So be sure to check them out too.

As for what you can expect from it, here's what it will feature:

  • RPG and Turn-based Tactical Combat: A tantalizing mix of gameplay styles keeping strategy at the forefront
  • Experience the Horrors of the Old Ones: Enter H.P. Lovecraft’s sinister world and abandon all hope
  • Combat and Spellcasting: Both will take their toll on your health and sanity. Remember: dark magic always comes with a price
  • Try to Maintain Sanity: See the unseeable as your character struggles to hold on to reality—sometimes a little insanity can be beneficial in a world gone mad
  • Hand-drawn 2D Graphics: Journey into an illustrated world reflecting cosmic horror and dread

From the press release:

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a roleplaying game of horror, loss, and madness set in the strange worlds of HP Lovecraft. The upcoming original title developed by Cultic Games offers a mix of rich RPG world building and turn-based tactical combat for PC, Mac, and Linux, represented in an illustrative 2D visual style that manages to be both quaint and terrifying. Players will journey from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss, creating their own character based on one of eight Archetypes and carve a path through a broken and mysterious world. The desperate battle against the forces beyond our comprehension will haunt players until the end. The game’s unique Belief System mechanic determines how character sanity is affected by the warped reality and how sanity can be regenerated. It also affects the availability of dialog options, as well as their consequences, in a given situation. Physical combat will be challenging, spellcasting will have dire consequences, and sanity will be strained to the breaking point by unknown abominations. Sometimes the best solution will be to flee what lurks beyond the threshold.

They've also shared some up to date screenshots (click to enlarge):

There is a demo, which sadly is not on Linux just yet. We've asked when it will be available on Linux and will keep you up to date.

It will be available on Steam sometime next year, no proper date has been given yet.

I´m really psyched about this title! I like the setting, the atmospheric graphics and both what I´ve seen and read about the gameplay itself.I´ve always wanted to play a turn based rpg like this in a horror setting, so it´s about high time it happens.

Quoting: liamdaweThere's also a video of their crafting system ...

How did you resist the urge to write "There's also a video of their Lovecrafting system ..."?

XD

Looking at the gameplay demo, oddly what struck me was the music. I like the music quite a lot--always been fond of jazz trumpets.
I mean, the rest looked pretty cool, don't get me wrong. But it's rare for me to start looking at a game and the first thing I think is, "I can dig this sound".

I do like the Lovercraft settings in general.
Just feels something not done to death - yet.
And it doesn't seem to be the cheap "Here's Cthulhu and some tentacles" type of shtick either.

Looks promising indeed. With good enough gameplay, this could be a real gem. ^_^
