Micro Machines World Series will be a day-1 Linux release this Friday

By - | Views: 24,198

On Friday, Micro Machines World Series [Steam] will officially launch with day-1 Linux support as now confirmed by Codemasters.

I already posted about Micro Machines World Series coming to Linux, but the release date for Windows & Linux didn't match, as Virtual Programming's message said the 30th and the Steam store still said the 23rd. Obviously the 23rd passed and nothing happened...

Recently the Steam store page has been updated to the 30th and now Codemasters themselves have tweeted out to confirm the release on all platforms, Linux included:

On Friday, we're delighted to announce that Micro Machines World Series will race onto @steam_games for Windows PC, Mac AND Linux! ???????? pic.twitter.com/nPwuhsebSS

I'm excited, since I actually played these games as a youngster and loved them. It's also great to know that Virtual Programming are well and truly still in the Linux porting game, as their work is usually pretty good.

I will have some thoughts up at release, stay tuned.

Thanks for the Twitter poke, Jake!

Surprising to see a new release during a steam sale. That's normally a pretty dead period in that regard.

Hang on, port by Virtual Programming? I thought they weren't doing Linux ports anymore? What with them closing their github and all?

PS: I wonder if they can give us the latest Saints Row 4 update which includes the workshop support? ;-)

Yes! As a huge fan of the old gameboy game, I am so excited!

Quoting: GuestWhatever gave you that impression? I used to run the Github issue tracker. I left the company, and I guess they felt that it was better to stick with their standard support ticket system.
Lack of linux games from them recently, plus of course the github closing - seemed a bit odd from an outsider just suddenly seeing it disappear.

Quoting: GuestAsk DSV about that. They would need to request the job, provide the code, and pay for it to be done.

Yeah see, that's the odd thing..

If you check the news article:

(note at bottom)

It would seem DS had full intention of getting it ported but nothing came of it. Perhaps VP couldn't do it? Although considering is effectively a tailored wine it should just be the case of replacing the binaries.

It's a shame VP didn't fix their SR2 port though, a lot of the errors in the game log were VPs fault such as these:

Quotelibav: Custom get_buffer() for use withavcodec_decode_audio3() detected. Overriding with avcodec_default_get_buffer

[thread 0000000f][E][38711]: libav: Please port your application to avcodec_decode_audio4())

But to be fair SR2 didn't exactly have a perfect windows port either, so they were stuck porting a bad port.

Oh well, hopefully in the future their ports will be better! :-).

Quoting: GuestI left the company

What are you up to these days? Still in the gaming industry?

They seems to have removed the SteamOS and Mac logo. Also there are only Windows recommendations left on the steam page. I just wanted to pre-order it, but now I'd rather not.

What do you think?

Currently not up to anything for health reasons, though as I said earlier I'm helping VP out with the Micro Machines release. Not sure what I'll be doing next, probably something involving electronics though.

Thank you! The icons are back. I preordered now.
