More Details On XCOM 2 Emerge, With Linux Support

XCOM 2 is going to be awesome, that’s pretty much a given. The annoying thing is we have to play catch up to IGN’s obviously paid for exclusivity here. IGN will be stretching it out as long as possible of course.

It’s exciting because the original XCOM game is one of my all time favourites, and the port of the newer-generation XCOM from Feral Interactive is brilliant (see my review!). I’ve recently started a new “Ironman” mode with my 32” TV hooked up as a monitor for it, and this is with my Logitech F310 gamepad; it’s bloody brilliant.
You also only have ~20 hours left to buy it for dirt cheap on Steam, and I highly recommend getting the complete pack.

If you missed it, here’s the trailer:

It sounds like while it’s carrying the XCOM name, it will be a rather different experience. This time, we are the people invading. People have been comparing it to XCOM: Apocalypse, and it certainly seems to have taken inspiration from it. That’s a good thing as well, as I also lost many hours to that in my youth.

It sounds like it could be a lot harder, as the aliens are stronger than they were before too. They have had many years since XCOM 1 to advance themselves, and their technology was superior to begin with too.

One thing it will partially bring back from the original is inventory management, as the newer version had none of it. You will be able to loot dead aliens, and use their equipment in future missions.

Official mod support is a go too, so prepare for lots of excellent workshop content! I really can’t wait to see what people cook up, like more crazy alien designs.

It’s due for release in November, and we imagine that will be when the Linux release is too. Feral have plenty of time to get their heads down and bring forth the port. It hasn’t actually been said anywhere that Linux won’t see a same-day release. With SteamOS releasing then too, it would be crazy to miss that release window.

I love how the city looks. If the gameplay reflect the feel of this trailer properly this'll be a blast.

Liam, have you played The Long War mod? Because that's the ultimate way to play the newer XCOM game. It's such a meaty, comprehensive mod, that it might as well be a professionally made expansion.

It hasn't been said anywhere it will be later, that site is making stuff up. It hasn't been said it will be day-1 either, but still, my point is no one has said it will be delayed.

So i heard XCOM 2 will still use a heavily modified Unreal Engine 3.x.
I guess that's why Feral is still in the game for doing a port.

With UE 4 Linux is just another target, right?
Unless there is no problematic 3rd-party middleware involved.
