Move over Steam Link, there's a Raspberry Pi app in town now

By - | Views: 31,470

Valve have today announced a Beta version of the Steam Link app for the Raspberry Pi which could prove to be interesting.

Since Valve are seemingly discontinuing their own Steam Link device, along with creating the new Steam Link applications for mobile devices, one for the Raspberry Pi does make a lot of sense. I imagine quite a number of people already own the device, so being able to stream your favourite Steam games to it is probably quite appealing.

Specifically, the Pi 3 and 3 B+ are supported running Raspbian Stretch (A Debian-based Linux distribution). It can be installed directly from a Valve-provided .deb file and in the comments on the announcement Valve also linked to a Debian source package (after someone said about an arch PKGBUILD).

I imagine the Raspberry Pi folks are pretty happy to see Valve do this too.

Nice! Some time ago I was checking if it was possible to install android on raspberry, to run the steamlink app (short answer: it's not). Now the problem is officially solved :)

Does that mean the Steam platform has or will be ported to ARM? Would be cool to run it my Linux-running ARM Chromebook!

No, it will be pretty useless too since every game would need to then support ARM.

Who knows what the future of Steam Play will bring :D

I had posted this in the forums right before this article was released. @liamdawe is always on top of it, antihistamines or not ;)

I was about to look at replacing my RPi as LibreElec boxes, but between this and the progress on Netflix/Prime/etc. playback, It think they got plenty of life left in them (at least until I get a 4k TV)

This is why I'm interested in the Smach-Z. I think AMD has the only reasonably viable SoC that can support x86 and decent graphics which are both required for PC gaming.

I only hope that the Steam Controller's usb dongles will be compatible... Not a big fan of using the bluetooth alternative...

Do you think we may hope for a futur integration with Kodi (OSMC/LibreELEC) and/or Retropi/Recalbox?
Retropie and osmc are Raspbian-based, aren't they?
And regarding Kodi integration... you can probably launch the app already from it, but unless valve releases the code, I'd be surprised if someone creates a compatible addon for Kodi that replaces the UI or even has it's own reverse engineered base, but it's not impossible.

I'm currently setting up a retropie instance myself and am not quite sure if the app will replace my steamlink. I want to use my fighting sticks as primary controls and some 8bitdo's for games that need digital input, but it's also kind of tempting...

Hmm, my questions are... why didn't they just release a Link 2 with an RPi built in (I really like the Link's case / size) along with 'build your own'.

Other question... how do I integrate this with Emulation Station!?

I already have a RetroPi set up on a 3 B+ with the roms mounted over sshfs, and it works great with my 8bitdo controller. But if I could ad Steam Streaming to it to work with the UI... though some of the games I would certainly rather play with the Steam Controller.

Yup. I might buy my first Pi because of this. I've borrowed friends' before, but I never bought one because I wouldn't have put it to use.
