New Wasteland 2 RPG Footage And Linux Release Info

By - | Views: 12,497
As more time goes by more Wasteland 2 screenshots have filtered in and now we have 18 minutes worth of gameplay and some info on the Linux release.

I got in touch with the developers to make sure Linux won't be a delayed release and got this nice response, they also noted about the original Wasteland to us;

QuoteLiam, with Unity porting to Mac and Linux both has become significantly easier and we don't foresee any problems giving it a simultaneous release.

Wasteland is currently planned for Windows, the source code is decades old and I don't know if we have the manpower to port it to Linux, it may have to be a DOSbox option for Linux, I can't say.

Thanks,

Which is great news for Wasteland 2 and RPG fans on Linux!

Also we have 18 minutes of the game to show you!

I am so glad you work on the weekend. I would go insane with the lack of news as I scavenge the web of the world for news pertaining to gaming on Linux. Thanks, Liam! Will watch the video soon!

The goats are weird in this game (10:50 in the video).

So while Harebrained Schemes is saying:

We have started working on the Linux version of Shadowrun Returns this week. We have our build machine up and running and have started making test builds. It’s still unclear just how much more work is necessary, because the builds are pretty rough in spots. For example, we can create characters, but there are errors when loading into the first apartment scene. The editor is now compiling in Linux, but unfortunately crashes when trying to load scenes. We’re confident we can work through the various Linux-related issues, but it is going to take some time to wrangle them into submission.

We are a month after release and nothing to be seen, while the guys at inXile are saying its no big deal really....

Couldn't agree more. I backed both and it's frustrating to be a month down the line and no support for my platform. And what is a "reasonable timeframe"? <sigh>

When do I get the Linux version of the game?

As we said during the Kickstarter, we will release the Linux version in a reasonable timeframe after launch. We've done a few test builds in house but there are a fair number of issues remaining to be fixed. Rather than delay the entire release of the game to everyone, we're going to focus on the non-Linux platforms first as they have the most support and are the furthest along in development.

Liam, from where I sit, this is hands-down the #1 go-to place for Linux Gaming news. With your hard work and dedication, I can see a future Linux distro names after you; or at least a Kernel codename. =p

The Shadowrun situation is is all very reminiscent of BioWare/Neverwinter Nights...

I predict a Linux beta 8 months from now with something critical missing, such as cutscenes. Or if there's no cutscenes in the game, combat.

Great! And it's supposed to be distributed DRM free, unlike all these Steam-only titles appearing lately. I wonder what's going on with the Divinity Original Sin though. It looks like the Linux version is not coming out right away.

Didn't Shadowrun had problems because Microsoft owns the rights now? They promised a lot of things, including Linux support and DRM free. And that failed so far. What else could you expect, when MS is being involved ;)

Well, they could open the source code for the first Wasteland. I'm sure there would be people willing to make a modern game based on that (just like OpenTyrian) :-)

Do they own the source code? I guess so, but not the franchise. So they'd have to get EA's permission to open source that. So.... I'm not gonna hold my breath.
