In a very unsurprising move, new slides out of SIGGRAPH 2015 from Valve talk about Source 2 and Vulkan. The game featured is of course Dota 2 Reborn. Since it's Valve's most popular game, and their first game to use Source 2 it was to be expected.

It will probably be the first game on Linux to use Vulkan, so it will be very, very interesting to see how it performs against the OpenGL version. I really hope Valve have a setting we can change easily to switch between the two, as it will make comparisons easier, and not all drivers will support Vulkan at the same time.

I haven't been able to find the video that goes along with it, as it seems it's still sadly being hidden.

You can find the slides here if interested in developer stuff. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Great news, though indeed nought too surprising.

I expect them to include a -vulkan launch option, at least till they prioritize it after the drivers stabilize, just like they do for direct3d versions in windows.

Dota is love. DOTA is life.

(Lol I just launched DOTA and the loading screen gets 2099 FPS)

I'm not game dev but those slides look rubbish to me without the actual talk. Let's hope one is posted soon although I fear it will be too technical.

yeah i'd love to see a recording of the talk, just slides are not interesting

The NVIDIA talk about Vulkan is quite interesting too and there is already a video : View video on youtube.com

we got to have Vulkan drivers then though, and if the GoL Survey is any indication people want those in their bin-blob drivers.

Quoting: Bumadarwe got to have Vulkan drivers then though, and if the GoL Survey is any indication people want those in their bin-blob drivers.
Nvidia has already indicated that they'll release a blob with Vulkan support as soon as the spec is final. I'm sure AMD will (try to) do the same. There's already a preview implementation for some Intel GPU models with Vulkan, done by LunarG. Again, this will apparently be released as open source as soon as the spec is final. Hopefully other OSS drivers won't be far behind, as Vulkan drivers seem quite a bit simpler than their OpenGL counterparts.

EDIT: The intel driver isn't actually released as open source yet.

Any ideas when they might release this or when the spec is expected to be finalised ?

"Later this year" or "by the end of the year" according to various presentations at siggraph.
