PAYDAY 2 now available on SteamOS & Linux, free to try for a few days

By - | Views: 48,294

The co-op shooter PAYDAY 2 is now officially available on SteamOS & Linux, yet another popular game! I’ve been waiting on this one as I am keen to play it to see what the fuss is all about. Being the bad guy can be more interesting than being forced to be the hero of everything most of the time.

It’s a shame it got review-bombed after they made some changes recently, but I can’t say if they are good or bad since it has only just arrived for us. We will have our thoughts and a port report up as soon as we can. We had no advanced warning, so it will take time.

It’s also on sale, so now is a great time to check it out! I picked up the GOTY edition myself, and will be checking it out.

About the game

PAYDAY 2 is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter that once again lets gamers don the masks of the original PAYDAY crew - Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains - as they descend on Washington DC for an epic crime spree.

The new CRIMENET network offers a huge range of dynamic contracts, and players are free to choose anything from small-time convenience store hits or kidnappings, to big league cyber-crime or emptying out major bank vaults for that epic PAYDAY. While in DC, why not participate in the local community, and run a few political errands?

Up to four friends co-operate on the hits, and as the crew progresses the jobs become bigger, better and more rewarding. Along with earning more money and becoming a legendary criminal comes a new character customization and crafting system that lets crews build and customize their own guns and gear.

Guess, I'll have to wait a little bit more :(
That's because you are trying to execute the windows version.
You have to re-download it again.

Just to clear things up about the dlc and micro-transaction stuff as an ex-windows user who played it in the long long ago.

Overkill made a very public comment about how they will never put micro-transaction in their game. Now it's in there in the form of TF2/CSGO crates you need to unlock with drills(keys) that cost real world fun bucks. This is the main sore point for many major fans.

With the DLC Overkill made quality missions but lately I've noticed that they have gone a bit over board with the amount that there is but maybe thats just me. Also! You don't "need" the DLC, if you join a room where someone already has the DLC and starts the mission you can join in just fine.

Hope that clears some of it, but I'm super happy to see this title come to linux!

So, I turned off my second smaller monitor, Payday 2 now detects 4K resolution. Turned smaller monitor back on, still fine.

Looks like they have some issues to sort, but it was a simple enough solution for now.

Quoting: TheBossI really don't get DLC hate. It's how developers are able to keep games going for so long. Most games have DLC now and the GOTY edition is cheap.

Will livestream when i have eaten and got to grips with it.

I dont hate DLC. I own Civ V which is ~30€ with all DLC and I don't dislike it at all.

But Payday 2? That's too much. The GOTY doesn't include all DLCs -- that's why it's that cheap.

And then micro-transactions too!
They *do* make faar enough money eith Payday, it's not as they're poor guys. But instead of making a *sane* amount of monetization they turned it into a cash-cow.

They always pose as a "small-scale" "indie" studio while they're not. They have grown and are definitely earning enough to work w/o that much paid content.

I have quite some DLCs for Payday but at some point I stopped and considered the huge mass of DLC to be too much.

Agreed.
DLC, if done right, can keep a game alive for years and add fresh experiences and content. I see the point when too much of a good thing can become bad (I am looking at you, Paradox!), but a well compiled DLC pack every now and then is something I actually welcome. Same goes for microtransactions. Per se, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. They become a problem if purchasing in-game items is necessary to even reasonably play the game and/or if the game intentionally ships with crippled content that elbows people into purchasing stuff that really should have been a part of the base game. It's again a question of execution. I guess with a lot of ill will you can turn any legit business model into a cash grab. It's up to us as customers to weed out studios applying evil business methods and bankrupt them by not buying their products. *shrug*

I also have a question, since we're at it - can this game played in 3rd person view or is it 1st person only? I am not interested in the latter, so... :)
