Planetary Annihilation has officially launched as one of the biggest RTS games ever made. The scale of it is just immense as you fight from planet to planet, and luckily the Linux version was polished up!

They have been repeatedly pushing out patches to fix issues in the last day or two and it shows.

There may still be a few minor issues, but luckily the black screen bug when first loading the game are gone for me. I also no longer get the bug where their CoherentUI middleware crashes during the game. It's actually playable on Linux now!

Here see a lovely picture of me blowing up an enemy commander:

Had a game with new release no crash from the UI ( the selection freeze ), I thought all was fixed... Then I made another game and then UI crashed...

This game is amazing! It could have done with a little bit more polish before going final, but I just so happy they got the Coherent issue fixed in time. I have no doubt they'll get all the minor quirks fixed in time.

If you play RTS games on any platform this game is a must. Thank you so much Uber for supporting us Linux gamers!

Quoting: GuestI like RTS games and would be interested, but the first review on Steam has these lines:
- no "story" campaign
- you have to be online to play

So, not for me.

I couldn't agree more. Especially the fact that there is no single-player campaign is a downer (not news though). While I realize that lots of gamers are fine with multi-player only games - I'm not. :/

The fact that we see so many multi-player only and sandbox games recently should not be interpreted as a lack of demand for well-made single-player campaigns. It's just that SP campaigns are costly and require a totally different set of skills and my impression is that most indie studios wouldn't admit this.

So kudos to Uber Entertainment for being honest about that:

got this like half a year ago and even tho i was a big fan of TA i must say that PA was nothing but a disappointment in my eyes. "imense scale" doesnt do anything for immersion like in the spiritual predecessor where you had that simple but strong story of two cybernetic armies that are still fighting even tho their biological masters are dead for thousands of years, an ongoing war that has consumed million of worlds -> an atmosphere that is perfectly catched by the mixture of extreme unit counts, orchestral melancholic / blue soundtrack and depressing maps with ruins of lost civilisations in grey color schemes.

planetary annihilation doesnt do that. it basically says "screw immersion, story, emotions" and simply focusses on pure generic gameplay. im sure many will find that the most important thing to games anyway - but for me its not. if a game is so soulless i just loose my interest in an instant.

There is a Single player campaign... No it's not story driven, but story driven campaigns are difficult especially for smaller indie companies.

The story itself is a lot of work and time, which indie companies don't have. Also seemingly little things like cut scenes can really cut in to dev time. While big companies like EA, Blizzard (which ignore Linux) and so forth, can make great story driven games... It's because they have the staff. And while it may seem like more and more games are the multiplayer sandbox, but more and more games are being made by smaller indie companies that either have to make the choice of story or features.

This game in particular... They have figgen planets crashing into each other, and somewhat following the laws of gravitational motion; while controlling 1000's of moving objects at once and I can play on my i3 intel 3000 laptop...

Now while this game may not live up to the TA spiritual family of games to many... From a game dev stand point Kudos

Is it only me or pathfinding for naval units is horrible in this game?
