As always, GamingOnLinux is entirely funded by the users for the users and hopefully we can stay online for a long time.

First of all, I just wanted to thank all contributors to my Patreon campaign! You are all wonderful people helping me do this, I feel incredibly privileged to be able to do this thanks to you. I write hundreds of articles every single month and I can’t overstate how thankful I truly am to have the ability to do it, because of you.

Recently I’ve been a bit disheartened by some of the messages left in the Patreon cancellation box, which are all 100% anonymous. To all past supporters: thank you, hope you come back sometime! I won’t quote them or get bogged down with it, some people must go into it without fully understanding me or how GOL runs, but that’s life! Can’t win them all as they say.

As always, thank you for everything and I hope how open I am about communicating, well, everything is appreciated by the community. I value open communication whenever possible!

My inbox is always open if anyone has an issue and I’m always in the IRC, Telegram and Discord channels.
Sidenote: Please don’t email me for personal user support, we have the Forum for that.

If you didn’t see in a previous article, I will be starting up the GamingOnLinux vs Feral Interactive weekly events once again starting Tuesday next week! Due to the time when Feral is able to do it, I will also be hosting a Dawn of War III evening event once a week as well. Hopefully we can get some good community games going for it. I look forward to being trashed by all of you! You can find all our scheduled events on this page.

I gave my Patrons a teaser on this earlier, but here’s a little something I’ve worked on recently:
image
Not real numbers, or a real game, just FYI. Don't go fishing for something!

It has been requested that I show the Min/Max FPS in benchmarks when I do them (if the benchmark provides them). I’m pleased to say (as the picture suggests) that it’s now possible. I’ve updated our Chart code to support it and it’s looking pretty good. As always, the code is entirely 100% open source on gitlab.

As usual, I won’t be asking for support like this for another month or two, because I just like to get on with it and not bug anyone.

If you fancy chipping in, head here: https://www.patreon.com/liamdawe, if not, thank you for reading this far! If you want to do a small one-time donation, Paypal is also now an option. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: Grim85does GOL have a one off donation system, as opposed to monthly patreon. Given my real life monetary situation, continual donation wouldn't be something I'd be interested in, but a one off donation would be possible at certain times.
Patreon is the easiest for me both in terms of features and when it comes to taxes it makes things super simple. Since they pay VAT for me (VAT is a huge mess in Europe so to not have that burden is awesome) and I only have to track one place for income.

Patreon can be cancelled and restarted at any time, which I've seen a few people do already :)

Edit: That said, I guess Paypal if people want to do quick one time donations should be an option.

Pledge $1 or more per month
60 patrons
Thank you for your support (you should be able to edit this to any amount!). This is just to make it super easy for you.

Premium
$5 or more per month ∙ 133 patrons
Premium: As a supporter at this level you will gain the "GOL Supporter" badge on the website.
Includes Discord rewards

Premium Plus
$8 or more per month ∙ 30 patrons
You will get the $5 Premium Badge (and any extras ever rolled into it), plus pledges at this level will be shared free keys whenever I get them.
Includes Discord rewards

if you want a bit of advise read below otherwise skip it because some words of what I am saying maybe will sound a bit harsh... :o

So as I see from the above pledges you are trying to become a greedy Patreon........... WAIT!?!?!?!? WHAT??!?!?!?!

So let me analyse a bit what I am trying to say:

1. First you have to assume that even $1 means a lot to some people and with VAT it may become a bit more.
for example people that pledge $5 they pay actually pay $5.95 at the end.
Also you have to assume that some people maybe are supporting you as a patreon because they are expecting some kind of a reward and some maybe dont expect anything.
Well actually you have to treat your Patreons more or less equally with some kind of a reward when you can.

2.Your pledge categories reminds me of some greedy games the more you pay the more you awarded , so whats next ? pay 15 and you get a priority of a day one release game steam key?
Is like you are saying screw you $1 and $5 give me more money and get your steam keys if you want...
Then the patreon will say " screw you gamingonlinux and your steam keys, I am getting my humble monthly with just $12 and I am more than happy than spending 5.95 for your website" At the end some people may except an award and some maybe not , some people may say I like this website and I just support it and some other may say "why to support it since I have other ways to get my gaming news and I dont get any rewards , so whats the point?"

4.Finding a reward to please your patreons is a bit hard, Some people maybe dont consider steam keys as a reward so they actually dont care about it so you maybe need a better way to satisfy your patreons. I cant tell you what rewards you can give them but some gaming sites created some tutorials exclusive for ALL of their patreons , how to create a game in Unreal or How to do a character in blender and so on.....The possibilities are endless. Of course after a week or so you may release this article/tutorials to the public. I am just expressing some ideas.

5. Becoming a patreon to some is bit expensive/annoying and one time donation it maybe more attractive to some. The more options the better for gamingonlinux.

6.Some people find it hard to find where the hell you are hiding the Patreon Website or donation article site. You need a large button in the front page to say "DONATE" or "Support Gaming on Linux".
As far as I remember I send a friend to donate or become a patreon and he come back with the words "screw it I cant find anything about donations or patreons on that site"

well I could write some more points but I got an emergency call and I have to go to IT support so take care and I hope you understand my points.
As I said at start some words maybe sound a bit harsh but I just wanted to give my points out.
I dont intend to do any harm or whatever just pointing out some points that may help to improve gamingonlinux overall.

I love advice, so I will reply directly to the points raised.

This is the entire point of Patreon, give more to people who give more, but everyone gets what I do on the website no matter the value they pay to me. It's no different than tiered systems in anything else.

Quoting: wolfyrion2.Your pledge categories reminds me of some greedy games the more you pay the more you awarded , so whats next ? pay 15 and you get a priority of a day one release game steam key?

So, wanting to eat/drink/live and attempting to find novel ways is being greedy? You're clearly not my intended audience here, to be honest I think you're really quite rude. The point is, people can give me any amount they want, they don't even need to select a reward if they don't want to. As a blogger/journalist, there's only so much I can provide on a Patreon. Giving a little extra in the way of keys to people who give me a little extra help seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I'm not saying screw anyone, like I said before, everyone gets to read GOL no matter what. I consider myself one of the least greedy people around. We have no adverts, no paywalls, no timed articles, nothing. Everyone is valued by me whether they give $1 or $100.

I am always looking at other interesting ideas, but I'm glad you seem to understand it is actually quite hard to come up with good ideas. If people don't care about the keys, then so be it. People don't have to pledge at any particular level, as already mentioned.

Quoting: wolfyrion5. Becoming a patreon to some is bit expensive/annoying and one time donation it maybe more attractive to some. The more options the better for gamingonlinux.
As already mentioned in comments and at the bottom of the article, Paypal is also now open.

There's a very clear box that spans the entire content at the top of the site that clearly states:
"Support me on Patreon to keep GamingOnLinux (and me) alive."
That's hardly hiding anything is it? It's also the pinned Tweet on our Twitter account. It's also in the "topic" of the IRC channel I run.

Quoting: wolfyrionwell I could write some more points but I got an emergency call and I have to go to IT support so take care and I hope you understand my points.

I appreciate all constructive feedback.

It's whatever people think it's worth. The fact is, I actually know people who spend plenty a month on magazines filled to the brim with adverts, as I'm sure a lot of people know someone who does that.

And finally, again, people don't have to give anything.

The reward I get for my money is this website. I don't need anything more. Except, of course, all the games it makes me buy. I WANT THEM ALL.

I considered pledging $8 to get the key e-mails, but whenever I got any in the past they were all taken by the time I saw the e-mail. Even the one time I saw it 15 minutes after it was sent. So screw that. ;-)

Oh, and with the VAT over here, I pay $6.15. SO SCREW YOU WITH YOUR LOW VAT. ;-)

I still remember the dark days before GoL where finding reliable, reasoned news on Linux gaming was hit or miss and not even close in terms of real-time information. I'm happy to contribute to the site.

I'm considering to support you, Liam. I'm an eager reader of your work and articles, and all of them are brilliantly written, authentic and with knowledge of cause.
Your work should be fairly rewarded, and I haven't done it already cause I'm currently not gaining any money, so basically my mother would be supporting you at this stage, probably without knowing it. I will decide this in the next few days.
Meanwhile, keep on rocking my friend!
The world needs you.
César.
