Dropsy is the crowdfunded point-and-click "hugventure" that looks set to either melt your heart or scar you for life. The game will be released on 10th September, and here's the colorful new trailer for you to feast your eyes on:

The game was funded on Kickstarter in November 2013, and was covered in The Funding Crowd 23. During the course of the campaign, developer Jay Tholen hooked up with Devolver Digital for publishing. The indie publisher have proven themselves to have a good nose for interesting games, and with Wyv and Keep developer A Jolly Corpse also on board, Dropsy should have a great shot at realizing its full potential.

With its vibrant pixel art graphics and eccentric cast, the game looks like it would have fit right in between the 90s LucasArts classics Sam & Max: Hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle. However, Dropsy has some interesting features that sets it apart from most other games in the genre. For one thing, dialog will be presented through use of visual icons instead of text. The game will also have an open-world structure, where you choose which puzzles to tackle first, and story is experienced in a non-linear fashion. Hugs are also an important part of the experience, and as icing on the cake, you'll have access to a fart button from the save screen.

About the game (Official)

After a deadly circus fire shatters his world and tarnishes his name, Dropsy the Clown finds himself on a journey of self-discovery through a story that harnesses powerful themes of love and unmerited kindness. With his father gravely ill and the world turning its back on the once celebrated clown, Dropsy will need to help those in need, hug total strangers, and unearth dark secrets on the winding road to redemption. Oh, and Dropsy can also talk to animals.

Dropsy is a non-traditional take on the classic point and click adventure formula starring the game's perpetually carefree namesake clown as he explores a richly detailed world full of colorful characters and sinister secrets, doling out hugs along the way. Rather than lead players on a singular narrative path, players are free to choose which avenues of adventure they want to explore in an open world setting and can piece the puzzles and story together however they choose.

Dropsy will be available from Steam on release, and pre-orders for a DRM free version including a Steam key are already available through a Humble Widget on the Dropsy website. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I don't necessarily care much for clowns, but I love hugs and fist bumps! This looks to be a pleasant mix of weird and wonderful. Definitely taking a hugventure.

First look at the trailer a day or two ago had me convinced this was another cynical "everything is kind of awful but with a thin verneer of nice" sort of thing, but glad to see it's something different from that. I like the idea of a kindness-based game honestly, and hope it does well.

Thanks for your comment! That was a very intentional subversion on our part. I'm a bit tired of the whole stoner humor "this is a cute cartoon but is actually extremely perverse/violent/whatever" - so I wanted to make something that was decidedly the opposite. Dropsy is a game that looks weird on the surface but has a pretty gentle, happy underbelly. :)

There are certainly dark themes, but Dropsy himself is a complete innocent.
