Mushroom 11 was released yesterday on GOG, Humble Store and Steam and is a peculiar twist on the puzzle platformer formula.

Calling Mushroom 11 a puzzle platformer might be stretching the definition of the genre, but even though you move a mushroom blob by nudging it with your mouse cursor instead of moving a humanoid protagonist, it is similar to one. There are few puzzles in the traditional sense though, but you often have to think and plan ahead to figure out exactly how to move your mushroom protagonist across obstacles.

When you erase part of the mushroom with your cursor, it grows back roughly on the opposite side of where you erased. This enables you to move forward or shape the mushroom to be able to cling to ledges and climb over obstacles. You can also break the mushroom up into several smaller blobs, and this is often necessary when you need to do several things at once. This control scheme feels intuitive and I've had no usability issues with the game.

Each level contain several organisms, like flowers and insects, which can be absorbed by passing through them. Finding all of these collectibles can be difficult and some are much more challenging to obtain than others. There's also a boss at the end of each level, and the four I've beaten so far have required very different approaches.

You might recall that I wrote about this game about a year ago, and I was happy to finally get my hands on the full game. I'm really enjoying what I've played of it so far, and I just had to play it for a couple of hours before I managed to put it down to write about it. If you like a good puzzle platformer, I think you'll enjoy Mushroom 11.

You can get Mushroom 11 on GOG, Humble Store and Steam, and it's currently 10% off. Buying from Humble Store will also give you a Steam key.
