SDL is expanding gamepad support with 8Bitdo SN30 Pro, Google Stadia and more

Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL), the awesome cross-platform development library used by Valve, Feral Interactive, Unity, MonoGame, FNA, DOSBox and so many more is expanding.

Looking over recent development updates to it, thanks to their handy Twitter feed it seems a bunch of new gamepads have been added in for an upcoming release including:

That's in addition to the seriously large amount of gamepads and fighting sticks SDL already supports, I took a look at their database earlier and I was in awe and just how much it covers. Absolute madness.

You can find out more about SDL on the official site. It's designed to provide low level access to audio, keyboard, mouse, joystick, and graphics hardware giving developers less headaches when doing cross-platform game development.

What is the difference between SDL and kernel driver?
Both are needed for a new gamepad to be supported?

SDL should make gamepad access easier for developers.
So, yes, it's better if both support the gamepad in question.

How does SDL2 deals with identical joysticks? I have two Thurstmaster T.16000M and games only see one. On Windows it's no problem recognizing them as two separate joysticks, but on Linux games with SDL, they can only see one.

Now if only they would add support for my HORI mini controller. Only one my kids like to use... It's even on Steam's supported controller list but didn't work on Linux..
