As a free update to all existing owners, seven years after the initial release Kentucky Route Zero from developer Cardboard Computer is actually done and finished.

Not only can you now play through the full story, the update also includes the "interludes" - free experimental games which they published to "fill in the story and characters from different perspectives" and the game has new translations too, adjustable text size and Steam Achievements. Quite a big update!

If you had finished all previous Acts, I can't imagine how the wait felt. Act IV was released in 2016, so not only have players waited seven years for the full game, there's been nearly four years between the last two. Three people making such an ambitious game on a small budget (only $8,583 on Kickstarter), is never going to be easy though. Speaking about the long time, the team said:

The three of us (Jake, Tamas & Ben) started designing this game in the middle of 2010. We published Act I in the beginning of 2013, and have been updating the game with new acts or interludes regularly since then. So it's been a long road! We are so grateful for the opportunity to have worked on this game at our own pace, giving it the time and resources it's needed, and to you all for being such a great audience over the years.

You can pick up Kentucky Route Zero with all Acts from Humble Store, GOG, itch.io and Steam.

I played Act 1 all the way through in 2013 and was vagely surprised, at the end, to discover that it was a episodic release. Sadly, I never went back to it. I suppose episodic releases only really work if you can keep up momentum and stick to a schedule. There's no point in me buying Act 2 onwards now - I've long forgotten what Act I was about!

Sounds like it would be worth it to start all over.

As crappy as the devs are (long, unexplained delays and extremely little contact with players), they have made something worth playing. Act 2 in particular is brilliant, so I'd recommend replaying Act 1 and then moving forward with it. That's what I'll be doing.

Just...don't trust anything the devs do in the future, that's all.

At least they've finished the game, though. That is definitely not the norm in the industry.

I understand this for say a year between episodes (and still would wait for the full release before I buy and start playing), but four years?!?

I have the game since 2016 in my GOG library and didn't really played it. In fact I waited the final act to be able to start it. :)

You don't need to buy anything, it was only ever sold as a complete package. You own the whole game.

Finally playing it myself, because I didn't want to play it unfinished. Being a Kentuckian, I know quite a bit about the roadways in the game. Also the bluegrass gospel band in act I scene II is pretty good! Yes I'm a bit stereotypical in that I love bluegrass. It really is the greatest speech to the soul, in my opinion.

Don't spoil anything for me an' Ol' Blue now. She don't like spoilers. :D

I played part of the first episode back when it was released, but stopped in the middle to wait for it all to be finished. Guess I can play it now :)

...Once I find time to play it, that is. Curse you, RL.
