Shadowrun Returns RPG To Go DRM Free

By - | Views: 9,885
Speaking on their Kickstarter update Harebrained Schemes stated that they came to an agreement with Microsoft to sell Shadowrun Returns and future expansions DRM free!

So credit to both sides here for making this happen.

On their post they stated they are working on getting it on gog.com but for us Linux users we may still have to use Steam:
QuoteHey Everyone!

We just want to send out a quick update to share some good news. Thanks to a new agreement we were able to negotiate with our partners at Microsoft, Harebrained Schemes is pleased to announce that we are now able to release fully DRM-free versions of Shadowrun Returns and future expansions such as Berlin.

The DRM-free versions of SRR and Berlin will continue to be fully supported. You'll be able to download all game patches, use the Shadowrun Returns editor and experience user-generated content downloaded from third-party sites such as Nexus.

We’re starting work to get Shadowrun Returns available on GOG.com right now - not sure how long that will take but we’ll let you know as soon as we have an answer.

We’re very excited we’re finally able to offer Shadowrun DRM-free to everyone and look forward to making it available!

Take care,

HBS

I have contacted them to ask about where Linux gamers can get a DRM free version from but no reply yet.

Unfortunately GOG.com doesn't supply GNU/Linux binaries.
Let's hope they'll consider the humblestore too.

It's great to know that the game will have a life of broad distribution.  I'm pretty happy to have this news!  The game isn't perfect by any means, but it delivers an experience pretty close to what I was expecting, and goes a bit beyond by bringing Linux folks the mod tools (which we pushed really hard for, but they never promised... just told us they'd try, and see how it works out).  I'm personally quite happy with the game, and am really enjoying the combat system.

My only complaints (since I didn't really get bitten by the checkpointed saves) were that Physical Adepts were severely under-powered.  Now, they're pretty much the badasses I remember they should be. In fact, they're OP according to a few forum commentors, but I'm certainly not going to complain that the (essentially) monk/ninja class is finally a strong class in an RPG.  I'm used to them being pretty miserable to play until you've leveled a LOT, so the PhsAd path on SR:R is a welcome change.

The future of this game is going to live or die on community content, so I hope this move toward inclusiveness has the consequence of growing the player community and leads to more high-quality mods.  There are several huge and elaborate ones already in the works, and I'd like to see that trend continue :-)

Or really, anywhere.  Direct on their own page, Desura, Gameolith, Shinyloot, etc. would be better than not offering us something to buy without DRM.

Just get a Humble Widget on your main page. Simple.

Not that it need end there, of course.

Yes, clean and simple.  Very useful, especially for indies.

An interesting new option is called itch.io, which emerged sometime in August.  Their FAQ and blog. Apparently their fees are a bit higher than the widget, 10% instead of 5%, but fees are not active yet, so indies on it are currently just using it for free. They produce an embeddable widget, clearly inspired heavily by the Humble Widget (scroll down on this game to see the widget in action, below the Humble one, and a couple of examples of full pages for games hosted on the store.

Methinks that this "itch.io" might be one to add to the sales page.

Is there a place I can read about this Humble Widget thing? Is it only for people who got their games in a humble bundle, or can anyone use it? I searched the web and read a couple articles but couldn’t find much information about it…

stan: Check out this list: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Humble_Store
If you buy anything through the widget with your e-mail you used for HB account, then those games get added to your HB library.

Thanks for the link Shmeri but I want to sell a game, not buy one!
Hamish’s post seemed to imply it could be used to sell any game.
Shmerl Nov 14, 2013
Did you try asking HB about it?
Hamish Nov 14, 2013
Here is all you need to know stan:

And if you do not want to be on the Humble Store proper and just use the widget, just don't select "Please include in the Humble Store".
