Slay the Spire's fourth character is available for Beta testing

By - | Views: 10,197

Get ready to do some more deck building, as Slay the Spire now has a fourth character available for some testing in a new Beta. Currently, the fourth character can be tried by opting into the standard Beta on Steam, which is different to the other Beta for an upgraded LibGDX.

To actually access the new character, you need to have first unlocked the third character and beat the standard game. Not exactly an easy task, although on a dry run without a save today it took me about two hours to unlock the second and third character. Going through once more to unlock the fourth is another matter though, you're probably looking at 4-5 hours to get it from a new save. However if you've already beaten it and have the third character this new one should auto unlock.

Slay the Spire was such a huge surprise to me, it's so engrossing it's crazy. Even if I find it quite difficult, the variety on offer due to how it changes on each run is brilliant. As are the multi-stage boss battles, like facing off against a huge slime which keeps splitting itself into smaller versions, with each of them licking you giving you a useless slime card you need to get rid of.

The relic system is still my favourite part though. Even with each character playing quite differently and having access to different cards, the relics change this even more. Depending on which relics you manage to find or buy, can drastically alter everything about your run. Some might provide zero-energy attack cards to freely use at the start of each battle, stop you from dying, gain extra energy, poison enemies in each battle and so on. There's so many things to talk about with Slay the Spire about why it's as good as it is.

With a fourth character to mix things up even more, the value Slay the Spire provides just went through the roof.

Do check out Slay the Spire on either Humble Store, GOG or Steam as it's truly fantastic and just keeps improving with the updates.

I was planning on waiting for the full release instead of jumping into the beta, but of course I couldn't resist for even a few hours.

The new character is pretty cool, got a few sick combos right on the first run (it might need some hard nerfs).

So, I won't even be able to play the new character, as I haven't completed the game yet. Reaching the final boss isn't that hard if you had some luck with the relics. But beating the corrupt heart is unbelievable pain, not only do you need a great deck, but also a ton of luck with the draw, as the boss is a huge damage sponge and will kill you in just few turns.

"However if you've already beaten it and have the third character this new one should auto unlock."

Actually, that's only true if you were already in the beta. I have beaten the game on all three characters up through level 19, but when I switched to beta, it forced me to create a new profile. So, starting from scratch. I decided I'll just wait, lol.

On the other hand, I finally realized what those three little carrot things are for, so I have something else to work towards.

You just copy over your save. As they noted in the announcement.

By "already beaten it" you mean you have to defeat the corrupt heart? That sounds absolutely horrendous, I haven't even gotten close to beating it in the time I've played. I imagine a lot of people who have the game haven't either.

You do not need to beat the heart, just unlock the Defect by defeating the normal boss with the Ironclad and Silent. If you have the Defect unlocked, the new character should be available (you don't need to unlock it afterwards). I started with a new save and got it already, and didn't even unlock the ability to face the heart (and didn't even start a game with the Defect post restart).
