These have all been pointed out to me multiple times but got lost in my inbox, sorry! Locomalito has three interesting looking titles all for free.

Maldita Castilla (Cursed/damn Castile) is an action arcade game full of myths from Spain and the rest of Europe. The graphic style is raw, made pixel by pixel with a limited color palette, like in the old days, and displayed through a dirty old monitor effect

Play as Moebius or Pucky and rescue hundreds of strange creatures that inhabit unusual places. Move through teleporters and from one side of the screen to the other in a chaotic game experience that will make your neurons burn as you progress through the 15 levels.

Long forgotten is the legend of Gaurodan, the bird of thunder, and his fight with Guayota, the fire beast. But now mankind has discovered the egg of Guayota within Mount Teide, and it is only a matter of time until Guarodan returns from the sky to fight the beast and punish us for awakening his ancient enemy.

Fly around the Canary Islands as Gaurodan, and destroy cities, armies and colossal creatures in your path throught this frantic shmup, created for the lovers of classic games that require mastering.

The developer sounds interesting too since he basically makes them for free because he likes doing it:
QuoteI publish games as freeware for many reasons. Mainly, because I'm a crazy man who loves the freedom of publishing games in his own page, right when -and how- he wants. But also, to predicate a videogame scene that exists beyond industry boundaries, a videogame scene centered on the joy of playing and developing.

All look very charming and retro, what do you guys think? Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Don't miss Maldita Castilla's user manual, it's a work of art. The arcade cabinet decoration is also awesome.

I really do not see the point in freeware - why keep the game proprietary when you do not even have the oft stated commercial arguments?

The free software gaming community could use people like him. I really do not understand why someone would keep such things proprietary.

Some people like 100% ownership of the code they write which is fair enough.
Hamish Nov 18, 2013
Certainly they have that right, but I still fail to see the advantage for either the consumer or the producer in this case. Keeping it closed might actually harm the games themselves in the long run, as it limits their potential for further distribution and for third-party contributions that could keep the game's themselves alive.

True, why not shoot him a message and see what he says?

Open-sourcing the games wont benefit the (FLOSS) community if the games are built using proprietary game engines. From the Locomalito website, I gather that some of the games are made using 'GameMaker'. If the games were made using FLOSS game engine like 'LÖVE'/'Game Editor'/'pygame'/'SDL' then it would made better sense to open-source the games.
Also, I have one request. Since 'GameMaker' can now export to Ubuntu, can some generous person publish 'Spelunky' for Ubuntu.

What an amazing trio, man I loved each one of them!
Hamish Nov 18, 2013
Ah, so it is a GameMaker game. That may indeed be the reason that it is kept closed.
