Space Pirates And Zombies 2 now has a Linux beta available

Space Pirates And Zombies 2 [Official Site, Steam] is finally available for Linux in the form of a beta. The developers confirmed it would be on Linux and they have kept their word.

Speaking on Steam, the developer noted that there is no opt-in beta, the Linux version is just on the main installation. It's not yet advertised on the Steam page directly, while they gather feedback.

Something I would like to quote directly:

This is day 1 of the beta test, so please be gentle. We will fix things as quickly as we can, but we are new to both Mac and Linux. These builds have both been tested on a grand total of 1 machine each.

Previously, the first SPAZ was ported to Linux as part of a Humble Indie Bundle, so it's fantastic to see another developer now do it in-house. This is important, as the more developers we have familiar with Linux development the better. Also, their honesty is great.

I love the whole idea behind the game. A mixture of strategy and action, where you fight for survival against 200 persistent AI captains that can do everything the player can. You customize your mothership with randomly generated modules, each with their own unique stats and then go to war. It's not completely all-out warfare though, since factions can be made by you and the AI.

I am so extremely keen to take a look that I wanted to personally buy it, but sadly funds are dry at the end of the month so I have reached out for a review key.

This does sound nice and please, do be gentle...

... but I wonder how new they could be to Linux when the same guy already posted about the Linux port of the first SPAZ. :)

I gladly beta-test Linux versions of games, but I won't buy to test. I've even relaxed my anti-steam policy to "use it if testing requires it" for testing Crashlands and Region of Ruins, but I still won't buy anything there.

As for the game, I played a bunch of S.P.A.Z. and it wasn't bad, but got grindy. This trailer shows mostly the new 3D graphics, which looks cool, but probably is hell for actually playing it. I hope you'll still be able to play top-down (parts of the video suggest that).

Sounds good, definitely on my buy list once it works out for Linux.

Well picked it up last night, spent last night playing it.
Very smooth and no issues seen (considering they marked it as beta). The only significant issue is if you have more than 1 monitor.

While there are aspects of SPAZ1 in the game, it is closer to a 4x game as you build up resources etc.
