Rocket League is way overdue, we all know that, but honestly I am fully expecting it to arrive with the patch due in September named the 'Rumble Update'. This update will come with a bunch of stuff including a new game mode.

I'm speculating of course, so don't take this as solid confirmation of anything. The evidence is starting to come together though and I will be extremely surprised if Linux isn't released with the Rumble update next month.

Every time Rocket League is updated on SteamDB, the Linux depot is now also updated and this has been true for about two weeks now. This is the single most activity the Linux side of RL has ever seen being pushed into branches on Steam.

Originally the Linux version sat in its own "steamos" branch, but it seems like it has been finally put into their main testing branch named "psyonix". Why else would this happen if not to ready it for release? You can see the named branches on this SteamDB page.

On top of that, the Director of Development at Psyonix tagged me in a tweet about the Linux version recently too:

@darkgallium @RocketLeague @thenaughtysquid We're working on it, can't reveal the date yet

They are still being careful not to give any indicators after their previous failures to get it out.

I'm going to be honest, due to how long we have been waiting my patience for it started to wear thin. Considering how much activity it's seeing on SteamDB right now I am getting excited again! I just hope my own excitement for it doesn't get squashed again.

The game still has a crazy amount of people playing, right now there's around forty-four thousand people playing. So at least we aren't getting the game when it's dead, we are getting a still very popular game.

Still playing it with friends every other day. A release would considerably cut down the amount of reboots I have to do. However a program I'm using every week recently stopped working for me under Linux... sooo maybe not as much as I'd like.

Boo... Boo...
Boo...

Well since it came free with the controller I'll try it out but my expectations are dirt low and I bet it will be a shiznit port too with teribad quality - a big fsck you to the linux community.

On the off chance its not shiznit I'll be like eh ok. But man they really screwed up and are terrible at time management and persuing goals

Quoting: liamdaweSo because a game was delayed, you're just going to completely ignore it? That's such a sad attitude to take.
I can understand him. It's a pure multiplayer title - and even it's player base seems to be in good health right now, in my opinion such title have a shorter lifecycle then singleplayer titles (Witcher 3 for example). The shorter livecycle applies to the payed DLCs too, of course! My friends on windows have played and trained many many hours - it will be hard or nearly impossible to catch up with them. Even it will be a lot of fun, it would have been much better to play with them from the beginning. Lastly I don't like the information policy (for the Linux version) on this game - even now, it's just a speculation! I can't see a (good) reason for this.

I'm waiting for this game from the day I got my Steam Controller so I'll definitely give it a try - but I wouldn't buy it now because of the reasons named above.

You're under the, possibly false, impression that you're going to be able to connect with your Windows friends from inside the Linux version, after the amount of multi-player games that have had no cross compatibility I'd say it's highly likely to follow that trend as well & you'll still have to reboot to play it with them even after the Linux port finally arrives.

Hopefully I'm wrong as that would seriously be the final nail in the game's coffin for a lot of people.

I don't think it won't have cross-platform multiplayer... they said that they would allow even console players to play together with PC users if it was allowed by the console companies, IIRC... so there is no reason to lock Linux users out of, at least, the PC multiplayer.
Not to mention that such a port would be useless simply because our community is just too small. We HAVE to play together with Windows users, otherwise we would only play with bots and very rarely with other players, but all-human matches would be very rare indeed. That's the truth: We're few, and even fewer of us want to play this game and even fewer of those will keep playing it for a while, especially after seeing how hard it is to find a match.
Yeah, I think that a good enough reason for cross-platform multiplayer. Surely they wouldn't have bothered working on the port for that long if this was not to be added and the port was doomed to fail.

I don't think it will be a case not putting it in, more a case of not being able to get it to work like the other ports that suffered from it. Then again that might be why it's taken so long, they've spent all this time trying to get iot working.

There will obviously be more, lots more considering how popular the game is.

way too late, not going to play anymore

And that's only on my main account! Got a couple hundred more hours on my work account!

Edit: What I meant is: if it releases for Linux, ogh boy I can only think of the all-nighters at home!
